(CNN)Ted Cruz argued that since he's the only candidate who has been able to beat Donald Trump, he's the candidate conservatives should turn to as the chief alternative to the businessman.
"It is now apparent that the only campaign that can beat Donald Trump and that has beaten Donald Trump is our campaign," he said in an interview on "State of the Union" with CNN's Jake Tapper.
Cruz argued that while Trump has "consistently managed to score in the 20s and 30s," many voters view him unfavorably and are concerned about his chances in a general election.
"An awful lot of Republicans are very concerned that Donald Trump is not the right candidate to go head-to-head with Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders," Cruz said. "And as the field narrows, we're seeing more and more people coming to us."
Cruz dismissed the idea that he underperformed in South Carolina, a state with a strong religious and evangelical population -- both attributes that should favor him. And he downplayed Trump's victory, arguing that his lead narrowed in recent weeks and the margin of victory should have been greater.
Cruz also swiped that Rubio should have done better in South Carolina against Trump because the Florida senator had endorsements from the state's popular Sen. Tim Scott, and Gov. Nikki Haley. Cruz argued that when he had endorsements from evangelical leaders in Iowa, he was able to beat Trump, not place second...

Have you noticed the Trump Cult isn’t interested in any form of discussion. All they can do is ridicule, attack and denigrate anyone opposed to Trump. I wonder if any of them is bright enough to consider the possibility that the well will be so poisoned by the general election that it will effect Trump’s totals?
If Cruz and Rubio both stay in the race it’s hopeless. Kasich probably draws from the same pool as Trump and to me isn’t as critical. Carson is done.
I would not be surprised if Donald Trump fancies himself wearing a uniform that looks a lot like that (with many more medals of course) should he ever (God forbid) win the presidency.
We are going to know pretty quickly, but things don’t look good for Cruz. With his vaunted ground game he should have done better in SC.
He lost the evengelicals to Trump, very difficult to overcome that unless something big happens to bring Trump down.

With Bush now out then Rubio looks to pick up most of those votes which is very bad news for Ted.

On the contrary, I’ve noticed that anti-Trump people are very insulting. Most of them are also ashamed of their candidates as they never name them.
I find Trump and Cruz to be easily superior to the rest of the field, including the Democrats. But I don’t care about telling people how to vote. I think that’s their business.

Ted, you won a caucus, and in so doing you pulled one Hell of a dirty trick.
I don’t know if it made any difference in terms of where you finished in that caucus, but it definitely made a difference in terms of your character.
