(CNN)Ted Cruz argued that since he's the only candidate who has been able to beat Donald Trump, he's the candidate conservatives should turn to as the chief alternative to the businessman.
"It is now apparent that the only campaign that can beat Donald Trump and that has beaten Donald Trump is our campaign," he said in an interview on "State of the Union" with CNN's Jake Tapper.
Cruz argued that while Trump has "consistently managed to score in the 20s and 30s," many voters view him unfavorably and are concerned about his chances in a general election.
"An awful lot of Republicans are very concerned that Donald Trump is not the right candidate to go head-to-head with Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders," Cruz said. "And as the field narrows, we're seeing more and more people coming to us."
Cruz dismissed the idea that he underperformed in South Carolina, a state with a strong religious and evangelical population -- both attributes that should favor him. And he downplayed Trump's victory, arguing that his lead narrowed in recent weeks and the margin of victory should have been greater.
Cruz also swiped that Rubio should have done better in South Carolina against Trump because the Florida senator had endorsements from the state's popular Sen. Tim Scott, and Gov. Nikki Haley. Cruz argued that when he had endorsements from evangelical leaders in Iowa, he was able to beat Trump, not place second...

Look, his page will say anything he thinks you want to hear. I want to know what he has been saying before he was trying to impress voters. THAT is what I posted.
Trump’s negatives are equal to CRuz’s negatives. Folks have posted the info here, many times.
The one-on-one match ups are also close. Trump’s likability numbers will rise, where CRuz’s are likely to go down. (Everyone can speculate, can’t they?)
CRuz didn’t even win the evangelicals, in SC.....his REQUIRED to win base.
My family, friends and associates....in TX....do NOT support CRuz. I don’t see ANY CRuz signs/bumper stickers ANYWHERE....not in the residential areas, on the highways and byways. We see Trump yard signs and stickers in every area we travel in, here in the state.
When we were recently in NY, everyone we made conversation with or had meetings with were for Trump. One of our drivers said...Cruz is Canadian....he can’t be President. We got a kick out of his enthusiasm for Trump and knowledge of Cruz ;-)

Nowhere in the original report did they say that Carson was not dropping out of the race. What the Cruz team emailed was obviously taken from the on-air broadcast, not from the tweets. People are calling the Cruz team a liar and cheater based on the assumption that in the busy-ness of getting ready for the caucus they were following all the tweets rather than the on-air broadcast.
And even in the tweets there was discussion about what “in the race” really means if you’re not going to campaign. CNN’s on-air discussion was that you have to campaign if you want to be President, and Carson was not going to campaign in NH or SC. That was what the Cruz people passed on - that Carson was not going to campaign in NH or SC, just as CNN said.
He gave her a slight backhand and she was almost in the ER for three weeks. Wait til she makes her his Jeb. They will be calling the undertaker.
In post 37 you provided advertising copy for Trump’s resorts and golf courses, and argued that Cruz has done nothing to compare with that in service to America. That argument is prima facie absurd, and your follow up in 99 is a complete non sequitur as well, breathtaking in how far it misses any relevant point.
Still, I admire your enthusiasm for Trump and I wish you every success in your business.
It sounds like Cruz has shifted his core message from purity on the details, to “I can beat Trump”.
Imagine bragging about winning when the whole world knows he cheated to do it. There is something wrong with him. Seriously.
Why don’t you ask Trump. He said he had new york values not the values of Iowans (farmers).
He did not apologize for “lying.” He apologized that someone in his campaign passed along the CNN report.

Well, he never took a swipe at him until Trump did. I really don’t think he had a choice. But yes, his campaign needs to focus on Him not the others. Give the voters something to vote for. Not everyone is well informed, obviously, and he needs to reach them.
Why should anybody fight when they know they can never catch the lies that are blown about like dandelion fuzz? Trump hasn’t destroyed the power of the media; he’s just made his own media that does the same thing as the MSM, to whoever opposes him.
This country is hopeless. I’m going to protect and provide for my family and everybody else can go down with the ship for all I care.

Bingo! Whenever I see this, the speaker loses all credibility for such a silly comment.
I agree. The. It problem we run into then is that the younger generations are so abysmally ignorant. The elder generations tend to give him very strong support.
I still suspect there are RINO moles misleading him. It’s heartbreaking.
