Who's advising Trump on health care? His ideas are as unorthodox as his candidacy.
Politico ^ | 02/21/2016 | Paul Demko

Donald Trump has a plan to make America's health care great again.

It's very simple, he says: Lock the best health care policy minds in a room -- and don't let them out until they've crafted a plan for providing terrific coverage for everyone.

But the strategy, laid out in Trump's most recent book, begs the question: Who exactly would be locked in that room? And who is advising him on ideas which are as unorthodox for a GOP frontrunner as his candidacy?

Trump has repeatedly said everyone should have access to health care -- going so far as to say he supports "the mandate" in a town hall meeting in South Carolina Thursday night (although he walked that back on Twitter, saying he was referring to the rule that insurers must cover people with pre-existing illnesses). He also says government should pick up the tab for the poor so no one is "dying on the streets" -- a stance seemingly far to the left of the rest of the Republican presidential field.

Sam Clovis, Trump's national policy adviser, insists the campaign is talking with lots of health care experts -- but declined to name any of those advisers.

"We have experts around the world who help us on these various topics," Clovis said in an interview with POLITICO. "We get very frank and honest input if we do not expose these people to the scrutiny of the press. … As we get further along they might want to come out of the shadows."

To shed light on the advisers shaping Trump's eclectic thinking, POLITICO scoured the landscape of notable policy wonks -- from academics to lobbyists to congressional staffers to think tank fellows -- but was unable to find anyone, on either side of the political divide,

Is that insane or what? We need DC policy wonks for that. Some more studies, some more commissions. Kick that can down the road.

Get the best minds working to build an at home health device, i don’t care if its Big Hero 6 or a Mk 1 version of a tanning bed analyzer and cellular repair station.

Eff the hospitals, medieval needle stickers!

The problems are Obamacare and the whole idea of managed care.

We do not need another plan to try and fix Obamacare!

We need to put healthcare back into the hands of the doctors and medical establishments.

The government is the reason why medical care costs so much.

It needs to go back into the free market.

No amount of bullying by Donald Trump is going to fix the problem when his fix is more of the same 'but only better.'

RE: Eff the hospitals, medieval needle stickers!

Well, if that’s the case, you’re not going to like Trump.

Donald Trump says he could save Medicare billions of dollars by getting the massive federal agency to negotiate prices with the hospitals and major pharmaceutical companies.

I love Trump, but every time he says we must keep people from dying in the streets it makes me cringe. After working 25 years as a first responder, I can tell you that no one in this country is being denied emergency care because of their financial status. The rest of us are already footing the bill; we do not need any additional bureaucrats to help gum up the works.

Trump needs to put out a position paper on his plans to fix obamba care. That way he can stop all you cruz shills from miss characterizing it. His position is private sector solutions and if the laws mandate that hospitals treat those unable to pay, the government should pay the bill, not the hospital. Pretty simple and the right approach, some would even say common since.

As soon as I can get my hands on a Flying Car, I’m off to Elysium.

By that time, they will rename it Trumpysium and Ivanka will be running the place, not Jodie Foster.

I hear the place is YUUUUUGE!

I cannot dislike Trump. Nobody is perfect. Many are far worse, just have to size up the best Alpha and get behind him for support.

This does not look like a bad beginning, but yes we should want to make sure traditional voices are represented too.

I believe the collective Christian church made a bad mistake back in FDR’s day in promoting too easily his Social Security plan. What they did not see was that this usurped church charity, which is not a minor flub but a major gaffe. It is one of the best gospel display methods God has given. We might not always be able to heal with a literal touch like Jesus, but we can send a doctor.

This should be invited to step into the picture, and relief given to “government” programs inasmuch as the collective Christian church finds itself capable at a particular moment. It should be allowed to be administered such that the Christian affiliation (and for other faiths that may wish to participate, their faith affiliation) does not have to be hidden.

Can Trump be helped to be a Caesar with a deft enough touch not to suffocate such a witness... maybe.

Lock the best health care policy minds in a room...

That's certainly a metaphor, and not worth the time criticizing.

everyone should have access to health care...

Now that's worth a discussion. I personally think it's a true statement. The key is how to make it happen. One thing I know for sure. The answer should not involve Soviet-style central planning. Let the free market provide the solution.

Obamacare should be repealed. Portability is right in the title of it, and if that's all that were in Obamacare, that would be fine. Self-funding of health coverage will work, assuming the Obama Recession has its throat cut and we start to see employment rise and underemployment decline. Self-funding should include Medical Spending Acc'ts -- basically similar to a 401K or IRA, but with a one year expiration and the deductions are from pre-tax earnings including SS and Medicare; the needed change is to remove the expiration on the money, so the worker can continue to use it and accumulate it for the twilight years, when, as we're often told, we use most of our health care dollars. Having a one year limit on MSA is boneheaded idiocy, and was only done in order to foster dependence on the gubmint.

RE: That way he can stop all you cruz shills from miss characterizing it.

Why are you blaming folks like me? The fact that he is all over the place (once for the mandate, then telling us he’s going to abolish Obamacare, once for universal healthcare like Scotland, then telling us he is for competition) isn’t the fault of your so called “Cruz shills”.

It’s HIS FAULT for being vague on it and giving contradictory signals.

The fact that you admit that he needs to put out a position paper just shows this.

It goes deeper than that.

The core of the problem with medical care in this country is that it is financed almost entirely through third-party payment systems. The underlying problem is the same, regardless of whether the "third party" in question is a government or an insurance company.

You really can't have a "free market" unless the buyer and the seller interact directly.

Very few Americans would ever want this -- and this is really a pathetic indictment of what this country has become. The dirty little secret even for many so-called "conservatives" is that "health care" means nothing to them beyond how it answers one question: "How do I get someone else to pay the medical bills I can't afford to pay myself?"

If the government mandates that you treat someone that is not able to pay, then the government should pay that bill not you. That is what Trumps position boils down to.

This is where positive, voluntary charity might be able to start addressing this. Might... we would need to do the math. But if as part of the bargain of doing this, a Christian charity got to state to the beneficiary that it was Christian, I think more would be willing. They would think “Mission opportunity.”

Donald has a secret plan, but it will be great, or he will improvise something on the fly, which will be great, and he has no interest in engaging prior to November with anyone who has been fighting this battle for many years, because they’re all stupid. So shut up and march, because in Donald we believe.

Because you and a few others around have made a career out of miss characterizing Trumps positions on every thing, and spamming FR with it 24/7.

Not if it can be made to look like the Sessions-Trump collaborations.

Trump has been flying by the seat of his pants in lieu of better material. He has to say SOMETHING, after all. There’s nothing that says he has to stay there.
