Mitchell and Todd Appalled By Cruz's 'Vicious' Office Space Parody
NewsBusters ^ | February 12, 2016 | Scott Whitlock

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell and Chuck Todd were appalled by a new Ted Cruz commercial attacking Hillary Clinton, labeling it “vicious” and “rough.” The campaign spot parodied the 1999 cult classic Office Space, showing “Hillary Clinton” angrily destroying a computer hard drive.

After playing a clip, a disgusted Chuck Todd condemned, “That was a little rough. That was a little uncomfortable to watch.” Todd added, “That looked vicious” and suggested the commercial crossed the line.

Mitchell lectured, “First of all, Ted Cruz is not running against Hillary Clinton yet. And I just think the parody is great in politics,” but “I'm not sure it plays in South Carolina, the Bible Belt.”

It’s rare on MSNBC to see such concern for the sensibilities of Christians.

Given that Chuck Todd has tossed softballs to Hillary Clinton on the e-mail scandal and Mitchell was thrilled when Bill Clinton hit the campaign trail for his wife, perhaps the journalists should have realized the ad wasn’t aimed at them.

A transcript of the exchange is below:

Tell the Truth 2016

Andrea Mitchell Reports
2/12/16
12:21

ANDREA MITCHELL: Ted Cruz has had very edgy, clever, some would say, ads. But there's a question. I just want to play part of this Office Space spoof for you. Because I was talking to a political science professor just yesterday about civility and discourse in this campaign. We talked about profanity, a lot of other obvious issues and then this pops up.

[Clip of Ted Cruz “Office Space” ad.]

MITCHELL: Now—

CHUCK TODD: That was a little rough. That was a little uncomfortable to watch.

MITCHELL: Yeah!  First of all, Ted Cruz is not running against Hillary Clinton yet. And I just think the parody is great in politics or anything, but —

TODD: Whatever. There was the line. That looked vicious. It was sort of, whatever it is, whatever that line —

MITCHELL: I'm not sure it plays in South Carolina, the Bible Belt.

TODD: I'm not sure if it does either. I don’t know if it does either.

The kicked dog is the one that howls.

Must be a good ad. I liked it.

Mitchell and Todd are parodies of themselves.

Agree. Office Space is an iconic movie to a lot of 30 and 40 something Americans. I can see Mitchell being oblivious to this, but Todd is just shilling with his fake reaction.

Two points: the ad works in part because it demonstrates that, and how, Cruz prepared to take on Clinton. Second, talk of the ad with the porn star has largely evaporated. This isn’t the first time Cruz has pulled a rabbit from his political hat to mask a misstep.

To borrow a line from the Eagles, take it to the limit one more time.

If you allow yourself to synthesize what is actually known about the behavior of this woman, rather than just read her adoring press, you cannot see that ad as shocking or below the belt. That is EXACTLY Hillary Clinton’s attitude and real behavior (often with human lives and not just hard drives).

You have to really drink the koolaid to believe the Hillary Clinton that Hillary herself describes is a real person.

Has Vince Foster commented on the viciousness of this ad?

Yes. He was heard to moan “That’s my girl.” Also, “I sure wish I could have been that server; at least she gave it a fair chance...”

It was so bad Vince shot himself. Twice. Left handed.

CHUCK TODD: That was a little rough. That was a little uncomfortable to watch.

And here I thought the photos posted online of Ambassador Stevens' body being dragged through the streets of Benghazi were a little rough and uncomfortable to watch. I always think photos of mangled, aborted baby parts are a little rough and uncomfortable to see, as well.

But yeah, Spoof Hillary's beating up on a computer is pretty rough, too. I can see why Chuckles would be discomfited. /s

Between Cruz and Trump, the ‘60s and ‘70s “activist” leaders of the Democratic party are taking a shellacking they never could have imagined.

I guess this does clear the air on whether Cruz is willing to take the fight to Hillary.

Is he willing to put the case of Juanita Broaddrick and other victims on the table?

I am a big Trump supporter as most of you know. But this ad is very clever, and very funny
It’s OK to have a Paul Ryan look-alike throw granny in a wheel chair off a cliff and a Hillary look alike beating up a computer server with a baseball bat is bad? Todd and Motchell can stick it where the sun don’t shine!

Well, while I agree with the video message, any half-capable musician & small studio could have come up with much better: Lyrics, sound quality, production (audio and video), and general creativity. This comes across like it was made by 15 yr. old ghetto kids, if that.

The initial idea is good, but if Cruz paid over $500 for this, he got robbed.

Boo hoo. The media is offended by a conservative who fights back hard.

Here is my response:

I guess for Cruz to have seen the pornstar coming he’d
1) had to have known her from watching films personally
2) had to been a member of the production company and responsible for every facet of the casting call
3) sat on every interview conducted by the casting company and personally interviews each
4) Cruz to be the casting and production company and never hire this work out and do it all himself

Sounds pretty ridiculous doesn’t it? That’s because to cast one ounce of this on Cruz is desperate and yes truly ridiculous
