Jeb-mentum! Marco Rubio's disastrous New Hampshire performance leaves Jeb Bush in a happier place

-snip-

Bush is a massive threat to Rubio now.

Don't get me wrong - Jeb did not do particularly well in New Hampshire either. Fourth place is no great achievement, especially when you consider how much money Bush spent in order to turn in that mediocre finish. In the context of this bizarre race, however, Jeb did himself a lot of favors by finishing 0.5 percent ahead of Rubio. His campaign has been an expensive disappointment up to this point, but now he can make the pitch to wary donors and Republican establishment types that he stuck with it, fought back, and bested the candidate who was supposed to be the great unifying hope for the party. While Rubio soared and then nosedived in spectacular fashion, Jeb remained steady and he came out (barely) on top of his rival.

And the fact that the race now shifts to South Carolina also works in Jeb's favor. He has organization on the ground there and the endorsement of the state's senior senator. He's polling well ahead of John Kasich, who finished second in New Hampshire but doesn't have significant resources in any other state. And Jeb's apparently going to deploy his brother on the campaign trail in an effort to appeal to the nostalgia of Republican voters who gave George W. Bush a decisive primary victory in the state 16 years ago.

Jeb's people believe that Rubio's newfound weakness and Kasich's niche appeal give him an opportunity to reassert himself as the establishment alternative to the Trump/Cruz insurgency, and so they're planning to utterly destroy both Rubio and Kasich and leave Jeb the last man standing. It's not the craziest plan - it just might work!

I believe this is correct.

By April (and maybe sooner) it will be down to 3:

Trump
Cruz
Bush

It’s very crowded in that establishment lane ...and this helps Trump who has a lane all to himself.

Only in the bizarre world of Washington political reporting would Jeb coming in 4th place in New Hampshire after barely registering in Iowa mean that he had momentum. He has $100 million to make his case and Republican voters aren’t buying what he’s selling. The only reason people are still writing about him is because his name is “Bush.” He needs to go away.

I think you are probably right samtheman. That being the case Cruz will have a great shot at the nomination. What most of the Trump people can’t see is that most primary voters are voting either for or against Trump. That being the case an argument can be made for about 65% of republicans being anti-trump. The more it narrows down, the more it help Cruz! In a Trump-Cruz head to head Cruz comes out on top about 8%. Not my words, but several polls. The sooner most get out the better!

That assumes Trump wont win over any more people. Think back to May, 2015. Do you think 35% of Repubs were on board with Trump then? No way. He built his support and he will continue to do so.

True, but he has been at this level for several months. And whether you guys think it or not, he is a polarizing figure. Bring on the two way! Cruz will clean his plow!

That would be a good job for Cruz, cleaning plows. In the meantime, Trump will keep winning elections.
