Don’t sleep on Ted Cruz. The next five weeks look very, very good for him.
The Washington Post ^ | February 10, 2016 | Aaron Blake

Cruz's win in the Iowa caucuses last week was, as it has been for every recent GOP Iowa winner, heavily reliant on evangelical Christians. He over-performed among this group, beating Trump 34-22 among them.

Two points here. The first is that, yes, Iowa is a very evangelical state, and not every state -- read: New Hampshire -- has the same makeup. In fact, New Hampshire is the least religious state in the country, according to Gallup, and PRRI reports only about 1 in 10 residents is an evangelical.

In this regard, though, the next few weeks of the GOP race look a whole lot more like Iowa than New Hampshire. And that is fantastic for Cruz.

-snip-

It may not shock you to see the most heavily-white-evangelical states clustered in the South. Many of them are significantly more evangelical than Iowa, where 64 percent of the GOP electorate last week was evangelical.

And here is the second point: The most evangelical states are pretty heavily front-loaded in this process -- thanks in large part to the "SEC Primary" on March 1.

South Carolina on Feb. 20 and a whopping six of the 11 states holding contests on Super Tuesday/"SEC Primary" Day on the first of March have more evangelicals than Iowa does.

And here's where it gets even better for Cruz: Heavily Christian Kansas and Louisiana and heavily evangelical Kentucky vote just four days later on March 5, followed by heavily evangelical Mississippi on March 8 and heavily evangelical Missouri and North Carolina on March 15. In fact, if you exclude Maryland and West Virginia from the definition of "Southern," the Southern states will all have voted five weeks from now.

Cruz must dust off the Bible. He isn't as proud of the Bible as he clearly ignored it in New Hampshire just so he would get votes. Very cheap.

You should consider that Evangelicals did not have a candidate that would cause them to be so motivated to get out and vote like they have in Ted Cruz in the last two elections for President.

There was a Tampa newspaper poll where Trump polled 48 percent.

Trump mentioned it at one of his rallies and pointed out Rubio was in the low teens and Jeb was like 5%.

Glad you are man enough to aologize. Cruz is the most conservative candidate and the concerns thet he might not win in November are without foundation. Every Republican would beat the Democrat handily in November.

“But CNN and Huffington Post are now the trusted news sources of Trump supporters”

I thought it was the Cruz camp that was listening to CNN.

Trump is currently ahead of Cruz by 16 points in South Carolina, and has big leads on him in FL, GA, and AL as well. With Trump’s huge win in NH, his lead will continue, and may even grow. The only Southern states I’ve seen where Cruz is ahead is AR and TX. In TX, his home state, he’s only leading Trump by 4, which can be easily overcome with enough campaigning.

I can’t imagine West aligning himself with Trump.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Why not? I see them both as non-establishment patriots. Both no-nonsense individuals who have been successful in non-political careers (at least not directly political). West brings some experience and demographics that Trump lacks. It would be a YUGE boost to his career, and place him directly in line to be the next President after Trump.

yeah I have been saying the same thing,, if Cruz has only evangelical states he can win in there is no way he can win the nomination let alone the general election

probably

Don’t you wonder, though, how Lindsay Graham has won there as many times as he has?

Don't bet the house on Cruz winning any of those states. If Ted brings his Elmer Gantry act to the South, most southern evangelicals will not be impressed. They'll spot hypocrisy and someone overplaying their religion in a millisecond.

And that very modest tithing percentage revealed for Ted won't help, either.

The WAPO and Huffing&Puffing and CNN seem to forget that the South not only has evangelicals, but has a HUGE number of “good ‘ol boys” (like myself) who like that Trump speaks and acts just like they think and would do themselves if they had a national stage...

I just moved to SC a year ago. Yes, I wonder how he gets reelected. There is a GOPe here and he is part of it. I am more surprised that Tim Scott and Trey Gowdy endorsed Rubio. Their ads are flooding the airways here. I expect Jeb to use Lindsay to do the same thing. Hopefully, Rubio and Jeb will cancel one another out.

Jeb’s connections make him the most dangerous.

Must cut the head off that snake.

HE and his kind are the REASON we hate the establishment.

Re:”I attacked Cruz badly yesterday. I regret that, but it was frustration at misrepresentations of Trump. I can’t believe I let posters get to me, but they did.

I think I’ll ask for them all to be deleted. He is now and will be throughout my 2nd choice. I hurt myself by attacking him.

What?
A Trump supporter with a conscience?
Better watch yourself, you now have a target painted on your back and there are many, many Trump supporters who are VERY concerned.
