Video: Ted Cruz Was Talking About a Wall YEARS Before Trump
Patterico's Pontifications ^ | Patterico

Posted on 02/07/2016 8:45:29 PM PST by SoConPubbie

Yesterday I told you how Ted Cruz talked about building a wall months before Donald Trump announced his 2016 presidential candidacy.

That post was misleading, and I deeply apologize.

Because Ted Cruz was actually talking about a wall years before Trump announced.

YEARS.

Here’s Ted Cruz, July 17, 2012, during his run for the Texas Senate, supporting building a wall:

Watch HERE!

MODERATOR: Mr. Cruz. You were asked during April’s Belo Debate if you support building a fence the length of the U.S./Mexico border and here’s what you said.

MODERATOR: He supports building a wall along the entire Texas/Mexico border. Is that something that you would support? Yes, no, why? We’ll start with you, Mr. Cruz.

CRUZ: Yes. We have an illegal immigration crisis and we need to do everything humanly possible to secure the border. That means fences, that means walls…

[edit]

MODERATOR: [unintelligible] wall, you said you’d support a wall

CRUZ: I said yes to that.

MODERATOR: — even if it infringes on property rights of Texans along the way.

CRUZ: Property owners should be compensated for that [edit]

MODERATOR: Is that still your position tonight, to build a fence the length of the Texas/Mexico border?

CRUZ: I think we need to use every tool humanly possible.

MODERATOR: And that is one of them?

CRUZ: Yes.

MODERATOR: Yes? OK. Do you have any idea how much it would cost?

CRUZ: I don’t know the specific cost but I can guarantee you it is far less than the cost of illegal immigration.

The moderator goes on to berate Cruz for supporting this despite the cost. Cruz sticks to his guns. That was July 17, 2012, and the debate clip used in the second debate was from April 13, 2012. Donald Trump’s latest presidential run was announced in June 2015.

This means Ted Cruz supported a wall years before Trump announced his 2016 presidential bid.

And here is Cruz again, from July 30, 2011, supporting a wall as part of a comprehensive strategy to secure the border:

QUESTIONER: Do you favor a path to citizenship for illegal aliens already in the U.S., stricter border enforcement, and/or the building of a border wall or some other policy or combination of policies?

CRUZ: There were a lot of questions in that piece. Let me lay out my position on immigration, because I can state it simply and in one sentence. I am strongly opposed to illegal immigration. I am categorically opposed to amnesty. And I strongly support legal immigrants who follow the rules and come here seeking to work towards the American dream.

Now with respect to securing the borders, I approach this from the perspective of someone who’s spent much of his adult life in law enforcement. It makes utterly no sense that we don’t know who’s coming into this country. We don’t know the criminal backgrounds. Our borders are largely unsecured. And particularly in a post-9/11 world, that is lunacy. I support any and all possible efforts to secure the border. That includes fences, that includes walls, that includes technology, that includes helicopters, that includes drones, that includes manpower, that includes employment verification, that includes approaching it as a law enforcement priority. And right now, neither party is serious about doing that.

With respect to a path to citizenship or amnesty, I categorically oppose it. And the reason is, I’ve spent a lifetime working to defend the constitution and uphold the rule of law. It is fundamentally unfair and contrary to the rule of law to reward those who break the law. And you know, one of the people it’s most unfair to are those that are following the laws. There are immigrants who wait years and even decades to come here legally. And yet what amnesty programs say is that we’re going to take those that have chosen to break the law, and we’re going to reward them rather than insist that people follow the law. I don’t think that’s fair, I don’t think that’s right, and I don’t support it.

Thanks to @mbhouse on Twitter (here and here) for the pointers.

He’s in the US Senate, where’s the bill to build a wall?

Doesn’t matter anyway, Trump OWNS The Wall. No Trump owns some buildings. When he is not trying to bulldoze some old lady’s house for a parking lot

I know you now think the Koch bop ethers are evil, just like Harry Ried.

I know that Trump supporters have been crowing about CNN calling Cruz a liar, “they are the second largest news station!!!”

A thread this weekend discussing Trump’s current “pro-life, except...” style of pro-life had several posters claiming this was a perfectly legitimate conservative abortion position.

Prior to Trump, claiming any of these views as Conservative would have been laughed off.

I do not have links - but Trump has revealed several specifics during a few his rallies. May even have such written on his website.

So you are admitting to non-reporting? Does that make you part of the problem?

Oh, yeah, you must use them in order to keep up with your competitors’ rates. So you are one of the pro-illegal business guys you claim are all behind Cruz.

Or are you trapped, just like the rest?

THE ISSUE ISN’T ME OR YOU. It’s who is the best candidate to be president of the United States. Character says a lot about any man. So you believe that a serial adulterer (like Billy Jeff), a strip club owner and a long-time Democrat has the morals to be president. I would imagine that you also believe that a man who 2X broke his marriage vows will keep his word about building a border fence and get Mexico to build it. You have NO STINKING IDEA what Donald Trump will do. He is as much a blank slate to you and America as Obama was in 2008. But, thankfully, many Americans are making up their mind about him. Sixty percent of Americans don’t like — and that’s worse than Hillary’s numbers, so you think Trump is better to beat HRC than Cruz. Very funny.

When are you trumpanzees going to do some accurate research of you own and quit puking out donniebrooks of lies. Cruz was talking about the wall when donnie was still giving millions to the Clinton Foundation.

A bill was started in 2006 authorizing a wall/fence be built but the funds were never provided. The female senator(KBH), whom Cruz replaced, was involved with killing the bill. It was all talk by Washington but never funded.

Cruz knew it could not be rescued by a single senator much less funded but would as president accomplish the task.

Y’all just need to learn to use the internet, it can be a wonderful thing. And oh, Google can be your friend also.

I back up my discussions with links at the demand of Trump supporters all the time.

For example, here is Cruz's page on border security:

https://www.tedcruz.org/issues/secure-the-border/

And I don't insult them and call them names. I make my case, show my facts and state my opinions.

Same here - I work in the house building industry - a designer, purchaser and QA ... And I’ve seen up close and personal how this sh*t goes on ... The worst part is that most of these illegals are dumber than a bag of hammers ... They do crap work, and we end up spending 3X the additional labor and materials to redo their screw-ups. In the end, hiring illegals ends up costing more money than hiring American workers who do the job right the first time.

The general attitude I see on display with illegals is “FK IT, IT’S GOOD ENOUGH!” - which probably works in Mexico or some other third world dung hole ... but that sure does not give you American quality.

Tell you something else I learned quick - these illegals get hired by some cheap-ass contractor, who thinks he’s gonna break his competition by using low-wage under-the-table labor - but what happens is his illegal workers eventually leave him, start up their own business, and then undercut him to the point that he closes shop.

Trump called for 80% of what’s in his current immigration platform in his 2010 book ‘Time to Get Tough’ — including building a wall.

What relevance does this have with regards to my assertion that Cruz has talked little about this issue in his 4 years in the senate? The answer is none. Nothing in your post contradicted anything I said in my comment. If you’re going to disagree with me, at least try to use logic.

In 2013, Ted was all for giving the illegals some sort of quasi permanent legal status, without making them full citizens.

Nope in 2013 Cruz worked with Sessions to poison the Gang of Eight bill authored by Rubio.

Listen to Sessions talk about it in his own words. Just one month ago.

I never said the Koch Bros. were “evil” - YOU said that, so do not put words in my mouth. My contention is that Cruz has his “big donors” who are going to expect “big favors” in return. That was my point.

Put a sock in it, missy. You’re a hypocrite.

You publicly condemn the sins of another, but will not publicly confess your own. I’ve got your number. Go have your “personal relationship” with meltdown somewhere else.

They go to the back of the line - try 5-10 years before they "get back in"

Yep. All this talk about 'expedited' re-entry is just grasping on to whatever thread the losing side can hold on to.

It's true that Trump has said those words (the links have been posted to me multiple times), but it's almost comical that some people are imagining a scenario where an illegal goes to Tijuana and gets a hall pass from some Mexican government amnesty drone, then proceeds straight back across the border waving their 'pass' into America.

FFS, it ain't gonna work like that under any circumstance.

People forget that Trump isn't a polished politician, and because of that, he's not micro managing every stinking word that comes out of his mouth. The man is open and honest almost to a fault, and sometimes says things in haste, that can be easily spun to mean the opposite of what he intended.

When he said that he wanted to expeditiously bring back "the good ones", I knew that he said that out of compassion for those who will, no doubt, be severely impacted by the hammer he's about to bring down upon them.

The man's not stupid. He knows how much angst and emotional turmoil is going to be felt when he unleashes the full might and power of the Office of President to implement his immigration plan.

The guy isn't a monster. He knows this is going to hurt, and he very much would like to see those who will truly join us as new Americans, move through the immigration process as smoothly as possible.

Talk is cheap, ie, Trump.

There is none so blind, as those who refuse to see.
