Firefighters Slam Ted Cruz For Claiming To Be Their Champion While Opposing 9/11 Health Bill
The Huffington Post ^ | 2/3/16 | Amanda Terkel

Posted on 02/04/2016 8:24:46 AM PST by Gandalf the Mauve

A powerful firefighters union went after Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) Wednesday for claiming to be their defender and champion in his Iowa caucuses victory speech.

"What Ted Cruz did the other night in his Iowa victory speech is disgusting," said Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters. "He said he embraces fire fighters and the dangerous work they do, says he's our friend and calls himself a great patriot. But when it came time to actually have the backs of fire fighters across the U.S., he was AWOL. Cruz is the worst kind of politician who will say or do anything to get elected."

That anger stems from Cruz invoking the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the work of the first responders in his remarks Monday night, when he said he would be different from President Barack Obama....

But what irks Schaitberger is that Cruz opposed reauthorizing the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which provides health care for those same firefighters and first responders....

“Didn€™t the families receive private donations also?”

I'll bet many of them did receive private donations, but there's no point in bringing those up since the records of such probably are either, well, private or have been (intentionally) lost. Plus, if even one rescue worker did not receive private donations, that will me an additional issue for the people pushing this bill to bewail.

But did they report what a pork filled boondoggle it is? Or do you even care? Or does it mater? My bet is if he voted yes you bitch about him wasting money just as hard as you are now about his no vote.

another Cruz Lie exposed

Not this nonsense again.

The Zadroga re-authorization was part of a Big Budget Bill that Cruz didn't support. It's pretty disingenuous to say that Cruz didn't support Zadroga.

Another Huff Post anti Cruz lie exposed.

I don't know if the 9/11 first responders law is a pork filled boondoggle or not. There is a lot of pork in DC - he chose the 9/11 first responders as the hill to die on? Stupid idiot.

“But what irks Schaitberger is that Cruz opposed reauthorizing the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which provides health care for those same firefighters and first responders.

More than 72,000 people are monitored by the 9/11 health program, and 33,000 ailing responders rely on it for treatment.”

Good for Cruz! The firefighters have insurance and workers- comp to cover all their medical. NYC can pay their own bills!

If you read the thread here many are pointing out how full of pork it is. It is now 15 years later there have been payouts, they have better health insurance than almost anyone in the private sector and so forth so you are saying that for symbolic reasons or to look good he should have voted yes? Isn’t that the kind of thinking conservatives are suppose to be against?

“[Cruz] chose the 9/11 first responders as the hill to die on? Stupid idiot.”

Except that Cruz didn’t die on that hill. So, I guess being true to his principles in this case didn’t even hurt him.

You are absolutely full of crap. The IAFF is “international” because it represents firefighters in both the U.S. and Canada. It has about 300,000 members. What firefighter union is larger? And it endorses many conservative Republican candidates, including including Rick Perry and Charles Grassley.

Fires have been cut in half the last 20years due to construction materials...yet the number of fire fighter have doubled...not to mention they are vastly overpaid and their pensions way out of line...But you can’t go up against firefighters after 9-11

Maybe you should spend more time asking Jesus to forgive you and less time calling people names. Not very Christian of you. You are the phoney.

It is you Trump people who are a cult.

I heard things about 9/11 and the firefighters from NY police officers. About firefighters looting the gap of jeans and loading them into the firetrucks.
I am not saying this is all of them.

Cruz has also voted against benefits for veterans.

http://correctrecord.org/the-gop-on-veterans-issues/

[snip]Ted Cruz voted to block further action on a bill that would have enhanced benefits for veterans including guaranteeing in-state tuition rates at all public universities for post-9/11 veterans. ....The bill would have improved benefits for veterans, including better health care and dental services provided by the VA.

Ted Cruz voted against providing $27 million for the Veterans Health Administration, as part of a $50.5 billion Superstorm Sandy recovery package.
