an act welcomed by the boy's father who told police he was proud of his son. I'd be a proud dad if my son would get get a few more A's in school.

I remember being a young girl in a Catholic Mass, I was probably 6 or 7. I was wearing a dress that my mother made for me, mostly purple fabric. She made almost all of our clothes, because we did not have much money. The priest was giving a sermon about the evils of people who wear the color purple. This would have been in about 1965. It was clear that it was a sin (from what he was saying) to wear purple. I remember going home, and being so ashamed, and never wanting to wear that dress again. But chopping off your own hand seems to take it to a new level.

I think someone should put the hand in clear epoxy to make a paperweight out of it, and send it to Angela Merkel as a present, since she likes Islam so much.
To: NEMDF
Wow that’s one I’ve never heard, and of course we have the “purple” vestments for Advent and Lent.

Where did he ever get that idea? One of the great women of the NT was Lydia, a believer who opened her door to Paul. The book of Acts tells us she was a "seller of purple" - most likely dye and thread used for clothes.
To: circlecity
That Lydia was a “seller of purple” means more than just being the local TJ Maxx. Purple was the color reserved to royalty and people of high status. Lydia was the clothier to the rich and famous. She had money, standing and influential connections in society, which was quite rare for a woman in the days of the Apostles. She was very much an asset in spreading God’s word through the Apostle Paul.

I think that he was making the point that purple was for royalty, and it was pretentious for anyone else to wear purple, except for Catholic priests (and other “officials”) in connection with certain specific events.
