Why the Fourth Most Popular Candidate in Iowa Is in First Place
Weekly Standard ^ | John McCormack | Jan 31, 2016

Des Moines - In the final Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll, Donald Trump leads the field at 28 percent with Ted Cruz in second place at 23 percent and Marco Rubio in third at 15 percent.

What's remarkable is that Trump is leading despite fact that's he's a deeply polarizing figure among Republicans: Nearly half of likely caucusgoers (47 percent) view him unfavorably, while 50 percent view him favorably. Trump's +3 favorability rating is well behind the favorability ratings of Ben Carson (+50), Marco Rubio (+49), and Ted Cruz (+37). Polling analysts note this is highly unusual:

...

"It makes you scratch your head," J. Ann Selzer, the pollster who conducted the Des Moines Register survey, tells me. "The field is so big--that's part of it. You've got more popular candidates not getting the first-place vote."

The poll found that Trump would lose a two-man race against Cruz by 18 points--53 percent to 35 percent. Close to a majority of Iowa caucusgoers (48 percent) have become less comfortable with Trump winning the GOP nomination. And the largest percentage of caucusgoers (37 percent) said the nomination of Trump would be "not OK" with them. (Just 20 percent said the same of Cruz and 15 percent said the same of Rubio.)

The all american boy.

Actually, he doesn’t own much of anything; its all highly leveraged, and light years from liquidity.

I believe he gave $250k to Clinton. Five times what was given to vets. He also owns strip clubs.

I'm disappointed. You have been a strait shooter in the past. There is nothing true in your post.

Is that the Canadian Constitution, or the American Constitution. Remember, 15 months ago, Ted Cruz had to PROVE he was a Canadian subject before he could renounce Canada.

An impressive list, but I am a bit disappointed that The Soldiers Home in Washington, DC is not listed. It has what has been called “The Summer White House”, which Republican Abraham Lincoln used to stay at when the weather down by the Potomac was hot a steamy.

Yes, Tump creates jobs for all sorts of classes of folks. Think of these poor single moms having to go on the dole if it weren’t for Mr. Trump providing a place for these single moms to advance their ahem...dancing career.

Can we please just stop with this infighting? The Republicans would be better off with either Trump or Cruz as the nominee. Both are heads and shoulders above the rest of the field, which is mainly controlled by the GOP-e wing of the party.

Trump’s position papers are conservative. He has NOT been endorsed by the Commie mayor of NYC. De Blasio was stumping for HILLARY in Iowa over the weekend.

Cruz is a rock-bed conservative. One of the best, if not the best in the Senate.

Just give these attacks a rest. I’d be honored to have either as my nominee.

I don’t know if you ever had Cruz on a pedestal, but if so, what do you think now if you have followed the story linked at my Comment #91 about his campaign sending out a mailing suggesting that infrequent GOP voters may have violated some law and that the neighbors might be informed about this. FReeper comments at that link range from poor judgement, poor supervision of campaign staff to brown shirt tactics and fascist behavior. In over 1,000 comments only about 3 people defended Cruz.

I think Cruz is as far along as he is because of Trump.Trump single handedly beat the brains out of bush and it was so easy to do.bush has never recovered.

Just for fun I decided to see what Daily Kos and Huffington Post might be saying about the shaming campaign. Instead I found this very detailed, long article outlining a number of less the shining performances by Cruz, smacking of McCarthyism, which makes the current shaming campaign seem totally in character for the man. Guess who the article comes from—Forbes, hardly a liberal progressive.

Cruz sets off my creep meter. Also, close your eyes and listen to his voice and accent. You hear George H.W. Bush.

I’m voting for someone that knows the real world. That knows how the real world works. We need a President with street smarts.

We don’t need someone that has been advanced by affirmative action. He’s touted a the “first hispanic solicitor general of Texas” and the “first hispanic law clerk for the Supreme Court”.

You don't believe he earned those posts???!!!

Like Clarence Thomas, Cruz is 100% against affirmative action --because it's unconstitutional!

Clarence Thomas was appointed to the “black seat” on the Supreme Court because that’s who he was replacing. I think the same is true for Ted Cruz. Not saying both of them were not smart. But if both were WASPS would they still be where they are?

LOL. Trump is breaking all the rules. I notice no similar head scratching when it comes to Hillary. Just another Trump "concern troll" piece.
