I can see why youâd want a candidate strong on an issue you care a lot about, someone who ignores the accusations of bigotry that so often shut down serious debate on immigration. What I donât get is why you think Trump is going to give you what you want.
After all, four years ago, the guy was an immigration liberal, criticizing Romney for taking an excessively hard line. His positions on other major conservative issues, like abortion, are shamelessly opportunistic.
His enthusiasm for bashing China is somewhat undercut by his enthusiasm for outsourcing the manufacturing of his own products to same. Itâs impossible to say with certainty which way he actually leans on any issue.
But his endlessly convenient opinion shifts, on the very core issues his supporters care most about, ought also to signal that Donald Trump doesnât care about you, either. Heâs against outsourcing and immigration, as long as thatâs getting him votes. But if he can find a different coalition, heâll happily abandon the current one in a flash.

You know that Trump’s in hock to Goldman Sachs. And Soros.
Or the shitstorm that's gong to rain down on Cruz's head on Monday when the Iowa TV stations start broadcasting this stuff: https://www.google.com/search?q=iowa+state+secretary+of+state&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#tbm=nws&q=iowa++secretary+state+cruz+mailer
Tarp was the $700 million program to help stabilize the banking industry that was initiated by George W Bush. And yes it was badly needed at the time.
The reason the Great Depression back in 1929 happened is that the Federal Reserved tightened the money supply because they were stupidly afraid at the time of getting to far away from gold prices. That caused a liquidity crisis in the banks and the FED had no programs at the time to combat a liquidity crisis. So you had bank runs and bank closing and all the businesses that relied on lines on credit went under with the banks.
The reason Tarp was necessary, is that most of the protections against a liquidity crisis that were put in place after the Great Depression had been eroded through bi-partisan efforts over many years.
The Bank Reserve ratio had been cut several times. And more importantly more and more exemptions were being issued to exempt certain deposits from the reserve ratio requirements all together. Thus the effective reserve ratio was close to 1% at the time of the 2008 financial crisis and not enough to relieve the liquidity crisis.
Glass-Steagall had been repealed allowing banks to invest in riskier assets. Credit default swaps were used by the banks to offset some of the risk of riskier investments, but the Federal Government had shirked it’s duty to look into the credit default swaps and verify that they were capable of offsetting the risk. They weren’t.
Much of the rationale for removing the protections were to allow free trade in banking with foreign competitors. So instead of making their banks play by our rules to have access to our markets, we lowered our standards to foreign countries standards.
All of the Tarp loans with the exception of some of the funds specifically authorized by Congress to bail out GM were secured by the borrowers and repaid with interest.
So I supported Tarp at the time to and still think it was the right move. However, I believe Congress let us down in many ways in the decades leading up to 2008.
Banks should have gone through bankruptcy. Wall street got protected at the expense of taxpayers. Auto companies should have gone through normal BK proceedings and the bond holders first in line like the BK laws say rather than unions getting special treatment. All that would have meant short term pain, but the recession would not have lasted ad long.
I called a friend of mine who loves down in TX and asked her opinion as she has been closer to the subject.
She said that he was a lawyer and a first-time senator and how’d that work out last time?
There were too many banks in trouble to run them all through bankruptcy. You would have caused many many non-banking failures and had another Great Depression. There is an argument that what we went through was a depression, but not nearly as severe as it could have been.
I agreed with bailing out the auto companies just like Reagan bailed out Chrysler. But to bail out any U.S. industry while our import tariffs are almost non-existent is probably throwing good money after bad. I do think the creditor rights were trampled by Obama and that shouldn’t have happened.
What your proposing would not have shortened the recession. It would have turned it into a major depression.
When we went through the Great Depression we had import tariffs in the high 20%’s. And I’m not talking about Smoot Hawley that didn’t get passed until a year and a half into the Great Depression. We have no such protection any more. Our stupid Congress and leaders have left our markets unprotected.
I’m not sure if Trump will put any protection in place, but he will make sure that we at least get balanced trade deals. He’ll use protected tariffs as a negotiation stance. And he will implement them if parties fail to come to the table and negotiate in good faith.
No other candidate understands this stuff.
Trump is finally talking the way we wanted McCain and Romney to talk in 08 and 12. However, McCain and Romney got soft and blew it making it tougher for a good candidate guy like Trump. Cruz needs to learn from Donald and prepare to be president after Trump.
He is really being crucified here on FR.....breaks my heart.
Actually, Jesus Christ was crucified, and today too many Christians are being crucified by Islamists.
Ted Cruz is getting criticized! Just a little bit different, I think!
âdo I vote for a globalist lawyerâ
.......................................................
His support for TPA...you can start there....enabling TPP....
It is ALL about globalism.....
Arnold was an actor. Trump is a successful businessman.
What did I get
At lest with Trump I will hope for the best
He sure as hell is beating the snot out of everybody so far
I think he acts this way so the people he is fighting against think he is not very smart and do not take him seriously
-Iâm a CRUZ supporter and I am not sure I can vote for TRUMP if he is the nominee... sad, I know.-
Imagine seeing Bill Clinton’s mug on TV every day for the next 8 years.
Trump has a decades long track record as a critic of our trade deficits and trade policies.
If the US can’t fix its trade it’s gone as a middle class country. It may be already too late.
GOPe likes Trump more than Cruz.
Remember Arnold Schwarzenegger? CA went for the celebrity who turned out to more like a dem than a republican.
Sure do. So does Mark Levin who sometimes mention this election. Problem is, they never complete their thought.
So why didn't the people of California elect the pure conservative Tom McClintock instead?
-- Donald "Bimbo" Trump
Awesome thinking my FRiend. In a country littered with degenerate homos and lesbos, by all means let's attack normal straight playboys.
Thank God our puritan shepherds saved us from the sins of the adulterers Speaker Gingrich and Livingston, paving the way for GOPe replacement Dennis Hastert, (R)INO extraordinaire and NAMBLA hero. Well done. Amen.
Curiously, our moral perfectionists follow parallel tracts with our Alinsky enemies. They both seem to be looking out for our best interests. Or not.
He’s probably the biggest phony to run for president.
Real classy. Someone disagrees with you and you call them a whore. Exactly the level someone on the left would stoop to.
Ummm the point of the article is he switches positions all the time.
