Middle School Lunch Lady Gives Hungry Student a Free Meal, Gets Fired for ‘Stealing’
Daily Blaze ^ | December 23, 2015 | Kaitlyn Schallhorn

When a middle school student came to Dalene Bowden and said she was hungry but didn't have the $1.70 to pay for her meal, the food service worker didn't think twice.

She gave her the meal for free.

Bowden's supervisor at Irving Middle School saw the cafeteria worker's deed and reported her. Last week Bowden received a certified letter from the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District in Pocatello, Idaho, that informed her of she was terminated from her job due to theft and "inaccurate transactions when ordering, receiving and servicing food."

Because they probably throw lots of food away every day and she didn’t think a one time extra meal meant anything one way or the other.

I’m a law and order tyrant - for example I am in favor of executing drunk drivers - but this? Firing her for this is ridicules.

“If she’d put $1.70 into the till, I’d have been outraged had she been fired. But giving away someone else’s property in the name of “charity” is not charity, it’s theft.”

I totally agree. It’s not charity when you take the money from someone else.

“I know I screwed up, but what are you supposed to do when the kid tells you that they’re hungry and they don’t have any money,” she said.”

Sorry, you should have paid for the kid’s lunch, not stole it for her. Typical liberal government worker.

Years ago I taught at a small Christian school. My husband lost his job and I was only making a small amount. Teaching at a Christian school is a labor of love!!! Anyway my son was a senior and a strapping lad. We paid for his lunch, but some of the boys went back in line for seconds. My son ate his first round while in line for round two, and even went for round three. Our lunch supervisor was simply the most loving woman of God because she never complained and always served all kids with a smile. She even had a girl bring me some vegetables or tater tots. Perhaps she remembered when I had Money left over from my son’s account, I would have her pay the debt of a family in need. Or perhaps she just knew it was our time of need.

IF there is no other history of stealing, questionable numbers/inaccuracy with amount in drawer at end of shift, etc., hire her back with the caveat she pays for the meal and gets a letter in her file documenting the incident with her signature that it is impermissible to do this in the future with the consequence of termination. Both sides are wrong, but the employee is more wrong. Good intentions doesn't mean it is legal. As much of a stickler as they're being, the school district is being a good steward of taxpayer's money. Will the one meal break the bank? No. But if they all did it, and other district members took the same attitude with their areas of responsibility imagine how fast that adds up. I can't imagine action like this being taken for a "minor" first offense...I think there is more history there or something similar happened in another case and nothing was done and the school district is trying to correct the problem. Horrible optics...make it right and move on.

Typical liberal.
She has a government job so the taxpayer money used to pay for the “free” meal is of no consequence to her. There are none so charitable as liberals, when it comes to spending other peoples’ money. The bitch couldn’t just reach in her purse and sacrifice 5 cigarettes worth of coinage to do something nice ANONYMOUSLY, keep her mouth shut and just enjoy the reward of helping a kid out. I wouldn’t be surprised if the kid comes home, tells his mom about the nice lunchlady who helped him, and the parents acclaim her virtue to the school who rewards her caring unselfish act.
Oh wait, we live in different times now. And you can thank liberals (like her) for the aftermath.

And what if she didn’t have any money on her? In most cases like this the worker’s purse/personal effects are locked away in a locker in back.

So how does she pay for it right then? And it doesn’t sound like she had a chance later.

Because it’s $1.70 versus thousands and thousands and thousands, etc. of invested, capitalized, depreciated and inventoried assets.

AND THAT is what is truly meant by the idiot liberal mantra ‘It takes a village’.

Hard times happens to every family. The village bands together and helps out that family, knowing that IF and WHEN they’re in need, the village will help them as well.

None of this those aren’t your kids bullshit.

Any notion that a liberal program is based on compassion rather than money ought to be dashed by this perfect illustration.

I’m not necessarily in favor of firing her, but I think she should have received some kind of disciplinary action.

Sorry, but when I saw her on the news this morning she came across as the type who knew she could call in the media and cry about her victimhood and get sympathy and a bunch of likes on Facebook. She wanted the kid to eat, but not enough to pay for it herself.

I smell there are omitted conditions in this report. It’s like the headlines that say “man sentenced to 60 years of prison for not wearing seat belt.” Never mind he had 15 felonies, 200lbs of meth in the trunk, and an outstanding warrant.

There’s something missing.

How many times did this go on. The kid knew he didn’t have money and if the parents didn’t give him money why didn’t they give him a sack lunch? If the kid knew he didn’t have money or a sack lunch why didn’t he work in the cafeteria like I use to (is that still going on?)? If the school knew the kid was repeatedly sent to school without a lunch or lunch money why were they not involved as a case of child neglect by the parent/s? Was this cafeteria worker warned before and how many times had she done similar things.

I am always skeptical on any story reported like this.

What the gubmint is really upset about isn’t that she cost them $1.70. Free and reduced lunch program is really easy to qualify a kid for. Had she made the kid sign up for that the District would have gotten a years worth of lunch money from the feds.

Based on the mind-boggling stupidity of the school's policy, the taxpayer money used to pay for the meal is of no consequence to anyone, including the taxpayer. Under the policy, she was supposed to throw away the food, and give the kid a new meal (PB sandwich and milk). From the taxpayer's perspective, the food was gone, one way or the other--either to the student for free, or to the trash. Heck, in terms of cost to the school, her actions actually saved money (the cost of the PB sandwich and milk).

I live in a district in KY where probably 20 or 30 percent of the people have their housing, food, electric bills, health insurance, Obama phones, and G-d knows what else paid for by you and me. I believe this comes to ca. 40 K a year! Half the kids get “free” lunches at school...and breakfasts too! Mom can’t cook, because she’s sleeping until 11 and then sitting on her 300 lb ass, eating snackies, and watching her “stories” until the kids come home. She is also smoking cigarettes that she traded foodstamps for.

She probably isn’t married, but if she is, dad is incapacitated from either doing too many pills or meth, or is sitting on his ass to prove a disability claim.

Some kids are at school until after 6PM, because they are doing remedial and tutorial work.
That means those children are getting welfare state reinforcement for 12 hours a day. Sometimes they are given food in the evenings, too, if they stay late.

Now, some of you are going to quibble about some kid being given a 1.70 meal...which they are going to throw away anyway? Come on!

When the school year started she gave me the form for the reduced lunch program. I just couldn’t bring myself to go there. We had always paid our way and paid tuition , bus and lunches for students in need when we had extra. What a lesson in humility! But God did provide richly for us during that year. I had money for my son’s lunch, tuition covered by my full time status and never even got sick during the H1N1 thing.
I have never forgotten the kindness of people who were there for us.

As for this particular lady...grace. I heard from an impeccable source that love covers a multitude of sins. ;)
