Googleâs chairman wants algorithms to censor the internet for hate speech - Quartz
In an op-ed for The New York Times (paywall), Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google, inserted himself directly into the middle of a heated debate about the line between fighting terrorismâs online reach and internet censorship.
âItâs our responsibility to demonstrate that stability and free expression go hand in hand,â he writes. âWe should build tools to help de-escalate tensions on social mediaâsort of like spell-checkers, but for hate and harassment.â
His words came just after Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, called on Silicon Valley to âdisrupt ISILâ last weekend in Washington DC. Clinton said it is crucial to âdeprive jihadists of virtual territoryâ by shutting off their means of communication.
With the rapid rise of ISIL and its sophisticated online recruitment and propaganda efforts, tech companies have been struggling with finding the balance between preventing terrorists from disseminating their message and being perceived as government tools for controlling the internet. Schmidt underlined that tech platforms should target terroristsâ social media accounts and remove video contentâsomething that Google, Facebook, and Twitter already strive to do.
Schmidt did not provide details about his proposed âspell-checkersâ for hate, but his suggestion may prove difficult to realize.
The debate about free speech versus hate speech is already a very controversial one, both in the United States where free speech is protected by the constitution, and elsewhere. People can barely agree on the definition of hate speech, so building algorithms to balance that fine line would be a tall order.
There are some other, less complicated ideas out there for fighting terrorists online. Donald Trump offered at a rally in South Carolina that maybe we should just shut down the internet. Trump said:
"Weâre losing a lot of people because of the internet. We have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand whatâs happening. We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, âOh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.â These are foolish people."
With Google's latest announcement, we'll be all the better having them tell us what we can read and say...
They can start with the WHITE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An excellent way to kill off their search engine. Morons.
I want an original Ford GT40.
That isn’t going to happen either.
I assume that this means that Google wants the authority to define what “hate speech” is.
And if they go through with it, let’s all watch their stock plummet...... 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1
I’m not sure of his intentions, but “social media” and “the Internet” are not the same thing. The latter is vastly bigger than the former. If a social medium gets too restrictive, it would likely begin dying off, to be replaced by something more open.
While inihibiting free speech goes against that old dusty founding document thingy we once called the Constitution, this is a private company and can do whatever they want. Just because a private company has a monopoly on information distribution (which is not new in America), we can’t tell them what they can and can’t do in their business. Unless, that is, the government is participating in the orgy.
“Somebody will say, âOh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.â These are foolish people.” Herr Schmidt sprecht!!!
Rights?? There are NO RIGHTS!!!!
It is the inevitable next step.
After succeeding in duping Americans into accepting “common sense” gun control — the Death to America crowd is moving on to “common sense” speech control.
“Most of the âhate speechâ out there is anti-Christian. I do not believe that is what he is talking about. “
Exactly! Google and the rest of the liberals want to control speech. Censorship.
Liberals are the most hate-filled, mean-spirited, envious, resentful, vicious, close-minded, violent, murdering, censoring, book-burning, ignorant, uneducated, unskilled, childish, prejudiced, racist, women-hating, man-hating, perverted, thieving, destructive, American-hating, Christian-hating, muslim-loving, communist, vulgar, dirty, smelly, regressive, restrictive, prohibitive, bed-wetting, and scared little lying idiots God has ever created.
OH, you mean statements like “kill whitey”, that kind of hate?

“Kind” speech, of course, doesn’t need protection. The kind of speech that needs protection is that which some find offensive, hateful or repulsive.
It does.
I do not believe so either. I think he means the liberal redefinition of "hate speech" and that is any stance on a social issue that is not the liberal/political correct stance.
