NY Times Once Thought 'Toxic' Woodrow Wilson Was 'A Man of High Equipment for the Office'

James Taranto at The Wall Street Journal often tackles newspapers contradicting themselves under the headline "Two Papers in One!" Wednesday's edition, though, went back to point out that the sudden revulsion at Woodrow Wilson's racism is at odds with The New York Times editorial page arguing in favor of Wilson for President back in those times.

Now Wilson represents a "toxic legacy" of unapologetic racism, but in 1912 , the Times oozed over him as "a man of high equipment for the office, worthy of the full confidence of the people." To wit:

They should never be allowed to erase him or their former love for him.

If the truth is erased, college grands will be declaring with confidence that Woodrow Wilson was a republican within a decade.

I doubt the NYT of 100 years ago bears any ideological resemblance to the NYT of today. I’m sure the writers and editors of yesteryear would cringe if they could see what the paper is advocating today.

I agree with you. I am sure 100 years ago the New York Times was a respectable Newspaper

Most people don't realize that the Progressive movement Wilson helped put forward is was built upon elitist ideas. Euthanasia and abortion were promoted through bigotry. A good read on the subject:
