Ted Cruz's Protectionist Gamble
National Review ^ | 11/24/2015 | Elaina Plott

On Friday, during a campaign stop in Harlan, Iowa, Ted Cruz made clear his stance on President Obama's Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), telling a crowd of supporters that the colossal 12 nation trade accord was "deeply concerning." "There are a number of Republicans on that [debate] stage who support TPP, who support [Trade Promotion Authority (TPA)]," Cruz said, according to the Des Moines Register. "I voted against TPA, and I intend to vote against TPP." Now that the 5,594-page text of the TPP has been made public, grassroots conservatives are voicing their case against the deal, and Cruz is staking out a position alongside them, arguing that the TPP would undercut U.S. immigration laws and take jobs away from working class Americans. It's yet another stance that differentiates the Texas senator from more establishment-minded, pro-business Republicans, who have largely stood firm in their support of the accord.

Hey NR:

If 0bama is for it, doesn’t that tell you what position to take?

I’m with Mark Levin on this (if I recall his position correctly). Who would give 0bama any more authority to do anything? Say “NO” to everything that comes out of this White House.

Cruz is “Standing athwart history yelling ‘STOP!’”

And NR is backing the uniparty statist.

Hopefully peak GloBULLism has been reached, none to soon while we still have a little of our manufacturing base. 30 years of economic warfare have taken its toll on the USA.

Cruz is for Free Trade, just not those agreements that Obama negotiates that cede our sovereignty and over run our borders with immigrants, not to mention encouraging currency manipulation and even worse trade deficits.

I hope Cruz will challenge the ridiculous position on TPP that Carson has taken. Carson says he supports it “conditionally”. There can be no such position in reality. TPP cannot be amended. Either he supports it as is, or he doesn’t.

The number of pages should make anybody cringe. Reminiscent of Obamacare. When they really want to put the screws to us, they try to bury the details in page after page of gobbledygook.

Any FReepers want to enlighten me on a topic? What is this currency manipulation mantra that has taken hold? I first heard the term used pejoratively by Mitt Romney last election cycle. Isn’t currency manipulation what central banks do — as in that is their job?

Japan routinely weakens the yen. They have to in order to keep their economy moving. Same with China. They import raw materials and export finished products. If they had a strong yen and juan no one could afford their products.

The Fed tightens and loosens the money supply by printing more or less paper and sets interest rates to manipulate the U.S. dollar. The same with every other nation on the planet.

Is this the currency manipulation they are talking about? If so, what is the big deal. Sounds like a politician bogeyman to me.

you are right.....about Cruz’ stance on this. I do not think there’s much of anything we can do to curb China’s currency manipulation.....in fact, in some ways that can work to our advantage.

When, for example, China sells its currency in the currency market at a reduced rate against the dollar, China automatically subsidizes its exports by 30 to 40%. This is how they make themselves more competitive, increasing their exports and taking jobs and production from other countries such as the U.S. As a result, the U.S trade deficit has risen by several hundred billion dollars and we have lost millions of jobs.

What a load of bull. St Raphael of TPA voted FOR cloture for TPA. That was the meaningful vote. Once cloture was invoked, TPA was a done deal. Or said another way, he was for it before he was against it. Once TPA passed, TPP was coming same as winter comes after fall.

Backing Cruz to the White House.

He not only has the words of wisdom he has action in his words.

He is moving to the top of the ranks, slowly but surely. Gaining supporters that will stay with him to the end.

A cloture vote doesn’t send the bill to the President’s desk. Last head count I read about said there were at least 20 Republican Senators against TPP. According to this article, there is a possibility it will not come up for vote during Obama’s term because of problems with the bill on both sides.

Thanks for the explanation! Perhaps if the US had a robust economy and manufacturing sector this wouldn’t be an issue.
