UnitedHealth Group, the largest insurance company in the U.S., on Thursday slashed its earnings outlook, citing new problems related to Obamacare, and told investors it may exit the program's exchanges.
"In recent weeks, growth expectations for individual exchange participation have tempered industrywide, co-operatives have failed, and market data has signaled higher risks and more difficulties while our own claims experience has deteriorated," Stephen J. Hemsley, chief executive officer of UnitedHealth Group, explained in a press release.
The release added that, "UnitedHealthcare has pulled back on its marketing efforts for individual exchange products in 2016. The company is evaluating the viability of the insurance exchange product segment and will determine during the first half of 2016 to what extent it can continue to serve the public exchange markets in 2017."

Kudos to the GOP for continuing their own EXEMPT status
while lying to their voters, year after year after year.
Let me be the first: DIDN’T SEE THAT COMING.
But, but, but......isn’t that the one that you can get through the wonderful aarp? /s
They haven’t contacted me for years after the flaming letter I sent them after the second ‘opportunity’ to join them. :)
Yep, same here.
Racist!!!
AMAC all the way. AARP can go suck and egg.
My understanding is not that they are exempt but that they get special subsidies so that the can choose the highest "Cadillac" plans at very very little cost.
I'd be interested in how much United Healthcare contributed to the kenyan's campaign and for ramming through 0bamacare. The shareholders should demand an accounting.
Now they're tarnishing the usurper's "legacy" and he won't be happy! Maybe he'll pitch a hissy fit like he did with the Governors.
“I’d be interested in how much United Healthcare contributed to the kenyan’s campaign and for ramming through 0bamacare. The shareholders should demand an accounting.”
United and Kaiser were two major players.
About a decade ago, when Medicare Advantage started in my state, it had about a dozen different providers, each with a half-dozen or more policies.
Each year thereafter, some have dropped out. Now, there are about a half-dozen providers, each with about 3 or 4 policies.
Then it looks like they must've swallowed 0bama's lies and thought 0bamacare would be a continuing windfall for them. If they're dropping out, you can bet they've taken it in the shorts, big time.
yes...but I'm sure the strategy was more like: jam the thing through, seize a large percentage of the market, overcome remaining political opposition as people realize how great it is, then blame it's obvious failures on insurance companies and morph it into single payer. All they have succeeded in is giving up more and more political power, while educating the public on how bad government is at running something like this.
Well, that certainly is unexpected. </s

I’m sure they thought they were going to corner the market when the small guys were out. Who knows the reasoning?
Individual States need to start nullifying Obamacare, or simply ignore the Feds, and set up competing systems within their borders
As was the two other “A” named Healthcare insurance companies.
Not to mention the fact that the AMA supported Obolacare during its crafting.
Let’s see:
Insurers, doctors, and Healthcare patients are all suffering as a result of the ACA being crammed down our throats.
All who supported it deserve every bit of misery.
Unfortunately, the taxpayer holds the bag, and gets screwed Big time.
Time to March in protest while we still can..
I ditched AARP years ago, because of their lopsided “non-partisan” agitation for various social legislation schemes for seniors that did not seem to have much long-term benefit.
Turns out that AARP is mostly an insurance brokerage, and does not have much to do with actually addressing the concerns of “senior citizens”.
UnitedHealthGroup is just one of the larger insurance schemes they have been pushing. Hartford Auto and Home is another, and New York Life is their choice for life insurance.
Check in and see just how solvent these firms are. And if one (or more) of the lines is being skimmed to make up for losses in another line.
AARP is so reliable, you know.
