White House threatens to veto bill to halt Syrian refugees

The White House on Wednesday threatened to veto a House bill that would require additional security checks on Syrian refugees before they could be resettled in the United States.

"This legislation would introduce unnecessary and impractical requirements that would unacceptably hamper our efforts to assist some of the most vulnerable people in the world, many of whom are victims of terrorism," the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement.

President Obama has engaged in a war of words with Republicans over allowing Syrian refugees entry into the country.

Republicans in the House and Senate have argued that in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks on Paris, there should be a "pause." The House is set to vote on legislation Thursday that would block any refugees from Syria or Iraq from being resettled in the U.S. unless the FBI, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Director of National Intelligence can certify to Congress that each person does not pose a security threat.

In its veto threat, the White House said the House bill "is untenable and would provide no meaningful additional security for the American people, instead serving only to create significant delays and obstacles" for people fleeing the conflict in Syria."

“I can do whatever I want.”

Legally, it takes 67 votes in the Senate to tell Obama to do or not do something.

But, he can go ahead anyway... what’re they going to do, impeach him? Or, will his handpicked cabinet of radical declare him incompetent, so Joe Half-Brain can right the Ship of State?

We are in a world of hurt.

Oh no, can’t submit it then. For the last several years no bill is not allowed to pass unless it has unanimous democrat support.

If police officers can be charged with murder for not placing a suspect in a seat belt and then he later died, can the President be charged with murder if Americans die at the hands of his refugees? It would be negligence on his part. Can we charge him with depraved heart murder?

I hope the Dems walk off the cliff and we have such a landslide it will leave GOP with 67 senators and 300 house members.

It will reverse all the crap of the past 7 years. And maybe we will see Obama’s school records, Social Security records and his immigration records.

Maybe the US could coax KENYA, the Presidents Home country with a cash bonus to take in about 10,000 of these refugees. They would LOVE Mombasa.

We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.

Barack Obama

These aren't refugees.

They're recruits.

Problem is, by the time some refugee gets it together to cause a calamity, a Republican president will be in charge.

I saw a Alabama Representative say that the funding bill comes up on December 14th and if they did not fund them there was nothing Obama could do by veto.

Congress has the money strings but will the GOP do it?

Unnecessary and impractical...like Obamacare?

It's not up to OMB to accept, merely to execute under the law.

The victims have their own sovereign governments. If they are dissatisfied with those governments, I'm sorry for them but hollowing out the peaceful population of a nation in the hope that peace will someday result is nonsensical.

How can you veto not spending money?

Doesn’t congress have to SPEND the money?

I really don’t get this point.
