Editorial: To fight gun violence, get the facts (barf alert)
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 13 nov 2015

Nineteen years ago, Congress put a brick on most federal funding to support basic research on gun violence. Wherever one stands on the issue of gun control, this is foolish.

If 32,000 Americans a year were dying of anything else, you can bet we’d be working overtime to find the cause and a way to stop it. But crucial research into gun safety remains undone.

Didn’t White Guys invent the gun to keep the Black Man down?

Fact #1: It’s not the gun that cause murder, but the human degenerate doing the murdering.

They don't seem to understand that the guns are just the tools of certain trades in Chicago. Solving the problem by controlling guns is like trying to combat obesity in Chicago by outlawing forks.

It is far less than 3% of the population that commits over half of all violent crimes. It is young black, inner city males who are the problem.

Tell that to the families of the 120,000 PLUS that are KILLED ANNUALLY by being given the WRONG Prescription by their Doctor or Pharmacist..

Let me see, over one million abortions are performed each year and we know the cause, and are expected to support it with tax payer funding...

You know, maybe this is irresponsible, but I'm not even going to read the article. I just can't take this junk anymore: the daily drumbeat of citizen disarmament.

We all know this screed is full of lies, The rest is just caterwauling about a government-created black market, and to stop said black market they propose to create a nationwide black market by fiat. Well, I know where my line in the sand is, and what I will do when the jackboots cross it. Until then, as Robert A. Heinlein said, this "yapping [has] same significance as squeals of kittens in a box."

Maybe the editorial board there ought to learn to do a little research before printing things that make them look foolish. Put "firearm safety research" into Google and you get, oh, just north of 1.4 million hits. Granted, not all of them are about actual safety research. But if even 0.1% are, then that is roughly 1400 studies. Hardly seems like no-one is looking into this.

Oh, and they are. The 32k deaths per year sounds terrible - and it is. But when you take away the suicides and the justifiable homicides that number drops to around 7 or 8 thousand. Still bad, but in a nation of 300+ million that relatively small number doesn't even crack the top 10 causes of death in a year. Not even close.

Oh, and while we're tossing facts and revelations around, how about one of the gun control advocates' current favorite targets? Those mean "assault rifles" they want to ban? Well, turns out if you bother to look up the results of some of that research the editorial board apparently cannot find... Looks like you are more likely to be bludgeoned to death by something someone picked up in the hardware aisle at Home Depot than you are to get shot & killed by an "assault rifle." Hmphf, how about that. Oh, and one other bit of research that seems to escape the gun control advocates. We had a national ban on "assault weapons" for 10 years. It had no measurable/attributable effect on crime. Oops. Guess y'all forgot about that one eh? Yep sports fans, we tried it - it doesn't work. So not only common sense but actual history shows that what gun control advocates propose is stupid and ineffective.

"But we must do something!" Right? Wrong. The whole gun violence thing is actually being overblown and over sold. Does anyone in the sheeple class realize that overall violent crime in the US has been trending down since the mid 90s? That while firearms ownership has gone up, violent crime has gone down? That some of the most violent and dangerous cities and areas in the Country are the very ones with the most stringent "gun control" laws? Strange correlations... But not anything the "gun control" advocates want out there - because it flies in the face of their message.

Do some real research Mr. & Mrs. "editorial board." Your prejudices and agenda are showing.

...the "fact" that 12% of the population commits 60% of the violent crime...

Truth be told, it is more like 3 or 4%- black males, aged 15-45.

The issue is the abuse of the research. When I sold guns in New Jersey, we had a customer who had a significant collection. He also had a jerk for a brother and a few 30 round AR mags which were illegal in New Jersey. They had a dispute and the brother turned him in for the magazines. The local police took all his guns and traced every single one of them.

Each trace was called a “crime gun trace.” There were a couple of dozen of them. The guns were 870s, lever actions, revolvers, etc. None of them were illegal and none of them even loosely fit the description of “crime gun.” But that’s the label used by the feds and because of it, we were threatened with ATF audits because we sold too many “crime guns.”

So, the local police department and the ATF wasted a few hundred hours of their time and ours to trumpet how they traced X number of “Crime Guns” to make the streets of middle class New Jersey safe.

It was infuriating.

Obama commissioned the CDC to put together a study.

It backfired!

Junk studies are plentiful and well-funded by anti-civil rights billionaires.
