Of course it is a malfunction. You don’t think they are designed that way to pay out, do you?

Yup. Malfunction by definition. If it pays out, it’s broken. That’s our rule.

The only machines that would have a payout of millions of dollars would be something like Megabucks.

All of the machines in any of the casinos I have played in have maximum payouts showing on the machines somewhere and nickel machines, playing maximum coins would be in the hundreds.

I’d sure bet on a machine malfunction.

That’s what I was about to say. No 5 cent slot I’ve ever seen has an $8 million advertised pay-out.

The casino may indeed have a valid point.

Anyone who gambles at Indian casinos are idiots. They are always doing this. You can't sue and win due to Severn immunity

Just like Obamacare, except you still get a bill or penalty.

If the machine can malfunction on a winning bet, then it can malfunction on a losing bet. The operator is already on record that this precise machine malfunctioned. How can we know that this woman’s previous bet wasn’t a winner, since the operator has claimed that the subsequent display was a result of a machine malfunction?

Even if they are off two decimals, it is still $86 K.

In the US, Casinos spread the risk of large payouts, either with other Casinos or by purchasing insurance.

On Indian land, there should be no expectation.

Stick to games where the payout can’t be tampered. i.e. roulette, craps, blackjack etc.

Customers need to walk away and leave this casino in the dust.

You know I live a few miles from that casino (Never go into those places - ever) and I am not a “Leftist Libtard Loonie.” How about a statement saying “SOME” people in the Pacific Northwest are loonies BUT NOT ALL OF THEM ARE.

According to the article:

Impossible maths: Lucky Eagle Casino said the machine Castillo was playing only offered a maximum jackpot of $20,000, so an $8.5 million-win would have been impossible.

They should have paid her $20K instead of 80 bucks and saved themselves a PR headache.

video evidence of a simular machine "metering down" would be evidence for the casino, but if the display is an instant number .. ?

Pay Up !

There are always two sides to every story and we are hearing the emotionally delivered first side.

At a Nevada casino I witnessed a black woman get three triple bars. She went beserk thinking she won $1M. The slot attendant pointed out that the customer did not play the "maximum bet" required to win the jackpot.

The woman went ballistic playing the race card, hater card, getting physical with the attendant and even went as far as to call the machine "racist".

The casinos seem to draw the something for nothing crowd in large numbers.

At least people are still free to be stupid in this country.

Some people probably shouldn't gamble but for most, it's a valid entertainment option just like anything else.

I've done my share of casino gambling over the years. It's a nice stress reliever for me. Now some people blow thousands of dollars on Disneyland vacations. But to me there's nothing relaxing about long lines, fussing children and 90 second rides that make me want to throw up. That would STRESS me out.

So I'd rather blow my vacation money on a casino, have a few drinks, a nice dinner, maybe see a show or two with the wife at night. Different strokes. I budget for it just like any other vacation and if I get lucky with a big win, all the better. But I don't plan on it.

So with regard to slot machines, they are about the worst bet in a casino (outside of Keno) but they can still be fun if you play them the right way.

For one thing, you want to take a few minutes to read carefully the rules of the game before playing. The machines will always have the "max jackpot" clearly stated. Then make sure to read the fine print. For example, to get that jackpot, you will likely need to make a "max bet." Placing the minimum bet, and it can be as low as a penny on a penny slot, will usually get you peanuts if you get a jackpot. I've seen people on penny slots play all day long on just a few dollars. But if they ever get the jackpot, they are going to be very disappointed. On most "penny" slots, the max bet is going to be around $2.00 per spin. So even penny slots can suck your money down pretty quickly if you place max bet.

I find the "sweet spot" of slots to be the dollar machines. Those are typically the single payline three reel slots and max bet is around $2 or $3. Most people find those slots boring but if you truly want to increase your chances of higher payouts, stick to those. There are other more fun slots with all kinds of bells and whistles, free games, spinning wheels on top, bonus payouts and such. But those generally do not pay out very well at all. The worst slots in my opinions are the 100% electronic ones, what I call the "cartoon" slots, like the one the woman in this article played. I like the ones that use the mechanical reels like in the old days. I also have better luck with them.

Obviously if the max jackpot is stated at $20,000 and your display says you won $8,000,000, you are not going to get $8,000,000. Trust me on this. The casinos have pretty good lawyers and they have themselves well covered. If this woman takes them to court, she is going to lose.

Same thing happened to me and a friend as we were walking out of the Reno Nugget. We figured what the hell, play the dollar slot. My friend put in a buck, pulled the handle and it hit jackpot. Hell, we were dancing around for close to a minute until we realized the bells and whistles weren't going off. Looked at the payout and you only won the million if you put 3 bucks in. Bummer! I forget what we got, something like $20. Still paid for breakfast!

Yes, we were pissed...but it passed. Lesson learned

My dad hit the jackpot on a slot machine in Vegas. The bells and whistles went off, lights started flashing, music started playing and people around started applauding. A casino employee ran over and pointed out that one of the wheels was a fraction of a millimeter off the pay line and claimed a “machine malfunction.” At least they paid him $400. He was still pissed.

It’s easy to tell when a slot machine at an Indian casino is broken. It allows a jackpot. Since all slots are now controlled by a central computer, the rigged results are programmed in.
