A Russian civilian aircraft crashed moments after it went missing in Egypt's Sinai region on Saturday.
There were said to be 217 passengers and seven crew members on board when Egypt's air traffic control lost contact with the aircraft, according to reports.
Egyptian prime minister Sherif Ismail has confirmed that the Russian plane crashed near Nekhel in the north of Sinai, and has set up a cabinet level crisis committee to investigate, according to AFP
The Russian airline Kogalymavia flight was on its way to Russia after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh resort on the Red Sea. Most people on the plane were Russian tourists, and there were at least 17 children on board.
Russia's RIA news agency has now reported that the plane developed technical problems and the pilot had sought to make an emergency landing in Cairo.
According to reports, the plane crashed in a mountainous area.
"Military planes have discovered the wreckage of the plane... in a mountainous area, and 45 ambulances have been directed to the site to evacuate dead and wounded," the Egyptian cabinet said in a statement.
Local media had reported that the plane has crashed, while other news agencies were citing Egyptian officials saying that the plane had left the national airspace safely.
The Sinai Peninsula region in Egypt has been restive for the past several months, with increasing Isis attacks reported in the area.
Russia began conducting airstrikes against Isis targets in Syria on 30 September.

Not to start any speculation but an observation... from my time in MFO 85-86 flew over Gaza Strip in French Twin Otter twice. Crew told us that Sand Uyghurs (not their words) shoot at aircraft like dogs bark at sirens, they just can’t help themselves.

Putin would not be flying their doom plane in defense mode if they were not considering retaliation on a massive level. Probably trying to figure out who shot it down then its payback....

Also, discussion thread of that site states flightaware website said rapid ascent (more than 3000 feet in less thawn a minute) followed by rapid descent until it disappeared off radar. Discussion thread also stated confirmed- no survivors. FWIW.

It was at 33k feet before crashing so no manpads as they don’t reach this high.

Latest news is that the pilots reported a technical error and requested an emergency landing right before the crash.

The rapid ascent followed by a rapid descent sounds like a stall condition. Center of gravity shift? uncommanded control inputs?

Yep, something failed, but the $64,000 questions is why did something fail? I’m sure the pilots on PanAm 103 thought they had a technical error as they were nose diving into the village of Lockerbie.

Yep. I'm going to speculate this was not ISIS. Sometimes planes just crash. It happens.
Sad. Lots of Russian tourists in the Middle East. I see them all the time.
