Donald Trump remains atop the Republican presidential field despite what most agreed was a more subdued performance in Wednesday's GOP debate, according to a new poll.

The celebrity candidate lost his spotlight to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in the third debate, causing him to drop to second place in the Washington Examiner's post-debate power rankings. Still, a Rasmussen Reports survey of GOP voters taken after the third debate shows Trump continuing to lead his Republican rivals.

Trump earns 26 percent support among GOP voters, followed closely by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 21 percent. Rubio is in a distant third at 10 percent support, showing that Rubio's solid performance hasn't translated into significantly higher numbers, at least not yet.

I truly believe Cruz and Carson’s numbers are reversed. They will get caught and blame a math error.

If Rubio becomes a serious threat I’m sure Trump will remind the voters of his Gang Of sellout.

After the debate he made a smart ass tweet about Tom Brady “deflating” footballs. Maybe that’s why no one takes him serious.

I honestly can’t see how anybody of sound mind can think the politically clueless and perpetually muddled Carson is the GOP candidate best qualified to be President. A nice guy, sure. A good physician, sure. Presidential material? Absolutely not.

I really hate to see these manipulative BS polls posted...Carson is around 3 or 4%, tops.

Yes you are right. I have been vilified on the Cruz threads for months by pointing out that Ted Cruz polls around 7% due to the fact that he is too conservative for the average GOP voter and he is too conservative for the average independent voter.

I had a momentary lapse of wisdom due to Cruz’s stellar performance at the debate Wed. I have always felt that it would shake out to a final 2 man race with Cruz substantially trailing Trump and I do think Trump will take Ted along for the ride to Washington as hopefully Attorney General.

But it appears that my original theory is correct. Cruz is just not going to poll that well. But I do think Rubio will not move up much either as he is so tainted by the Gang of Eight and his desertion of his senate seat does not sit well with me or many others I’m sure.

I also believe Carson stumbled badly on Wed night as I expected he would. He is totally unqualified and unprepared to be President. I look for him to fade in the newer polls that will be coming out.

The GOP nomination is Trump’s to lose. I think he’s the guy and I also think he will sweep the floor with Hillary Clinton.

100% agree. And you cannot underestimate the importance of Trump having the #1 spot on the stage. Leadership is a difficult thing to define but you know it when you see it. Trump has it. He looks like a leader, talks like a leader and acts like a leader. He is growing as a candidate before our eyes. He’s still bombastic but he gives the feel that everyone else looks to him for leadership on an issue.

Cruz is great. But there’s something about him I do not completely trust. He comes off as 95% sincere but there’s always an element of the practiced politician in his response. Notice how many times he referenced single mothers on Wednesday. Cruz has a dedicated but narrow base of support. The difference with Trump is that he has 3 or 4 core issues that are very conservative. Immigration, guns, economy and taxes and VA/military. It allows for some variation for not being the perfect conservative yet gives him the flexibility to attract large groups of non traditional Republican voters. If Trump seals the border and fixes the economy he’s worth his weight in gold.

If accurate, Carson’s continuing high poll numbers are bizarre to me. I know he is serving as the “less flamboyant protest vote”, but I can’t imagine that number is very solid.

Carson. . .a neurosurgeon, a church go-er, etc. What’s not to like. . .his spotted record. He is running on his “today” statements and hardly anyone is checking.

“Cruz still only at 7%.”

I think his numbers will go up. However I think this why Trump needs to be in the President nominee because of his wide support and why Cruz needs to be the Vice President nominee. Then in 8 years Cruz will be President.

I think his rapid fire speech is a detractor.

I am wary of people who speak faster than I can listen.

I figure they are trying to slip in some fine print that I will not catch.

My personal feeling is that Cruz would be wasted at VP although he may well get it. I would rather see him cleaning house as Attorney General which is a big job.

This isn’t going to sit well with some people, but it is reality > IMO.

What was Cruz’s biggest moment? Can we agree it was taking the moderators on?

He did a good job of it.

By doing so, he emulated someone.

By doing so, he acknowledged a sort of recognition of who the real leader was, and adopted his tactics.

I recognize the man behind Cruz’s comments.

That man opened up a whole brave new world for Republicans.

Because of that man, the CNBC moderators were skewered by the media at large.

Lest we forget...

Yes so true. Trump is the whole reason any of those other guys managed to summon up the stones to strike back at the mods. They see Trump doing it over and over again. And with him standing there they likely felt a little braver.

Absent an alien abduction Trump is the next GOP presidential nominee.

It was interesting listening to Trump yesterday. He spoke about the debate almost like a protective parent or big brother although that’s not quite the analogy I want.

He spoke about the questions to Rubio and how difficult they were, he said (paraphrasing) I don’t think people realize how difficult it was for him. He also spoke highly of Huckabee and the others.

Looks like this may be a Trump vs Rubio fight at the end. Id be surprised to see Trump attack Rubio after Jan. They will fight in the normal manner which is fine and expected.

Carson, IMO, appears to be ready to drop off the screen...little by little things are coming out and this may not set well.

Cruz will never be the nominee....He is a great conservative but for some reason cannot poll well. Not sure why. Beside Hillary would absolutely clean his clock in any debate.....by TV standards.

So Im saying it will be Trump or Rubio for pres...and quite possible Trump/Rubio for the ticket.
