BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bowdoin College will no longer bestow the Jefferson Davis Award, after the college’s board of trustees voted to approve President Clayton Rose’s proposal to end the practice.

The annual cash award to a student of government and legal studies who excels in constitutional law was named for the Confederate president. It was established in 1972 with an endowed gift from the United Daughters of the Confederacy, according to a news release from the college. In 1858, Davis received an honorary degree from Bowdoin College.

Why would the UDC endow such a scholarship (in 1972?) at Bowdoin College in Yankee Maine - home of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain - unless they were deliberately thumbing their nose at the man who helped break the back of the Confederacy by honoring Constitutional law incompetent Jefferson Davis in Chamberlain's backyard.

It seems more like a weird practical joke than a scholarship.

A thousand Whitworths had a thousand chances, but he was too tough for any turncoat surrender monkey to kill.

Are they going to give the money back to the UDC or just randomly eliminate the endowment’s name and keep the money?

You need to read up on Chamberlain. He had great respect for the Confederates he fought.

Obviously, it was intended as a gesture of good will. Most of us wanted to end the bitterness that grew out of the War and the criminal Reconstruction era. After the War with Spain, where both the North & South came together as Americans, once more; we entered an era or mutual or reciprocal respect.

That the contemporary Left has succeeded in torpedoing mutual respect, is one of the most disgusting--and stupid--aspects of what passes for contemporary American culture. The UDC are a highly principled group; and they should get their funds back, after this mockery of good will.

And your insult as to Jefferson Davis' competence seems more intended to offend, than to have any other purpose.

He had great respect for the Confederates he fought.

His famous magnanimity to the defeated probably didn't have much bearing on what happened in 1972.

I wonder if the original documents governing that scholarship are available?

Why would a college in Maine bestow such and award anyway? Last time I checked Maine is the most Yankee, least Southern state there is. Was there a Down East Confederacy that I don’t know about?

Clayton Rose, the President of Bowdoin, is a liberal that matriculated at Chicago University and Harvard before he took the charge at Bowdoin. He’s one of the liberal apologists toward blacks that the left embraces. I would not doubt that he’s close to Obama in some fashion.

“When will the insanity end?”

Hard to say. It all started with Vortigern’s decision to hire pagan Saxon reivers.

As a liberal and probable lifelong Demwit, he should be apologizing to blacks, and to everyone else.

The civil war was from the victors perspective about preserving the union

For NeoCons here it’s about race

And it’s personal usually but they never admit that

They are cowards

They say nothing about who they are

And they lie

You’re dealing with one now

One that lies about her past
