What would Joshua Chamberlain do?

Why would the UDC endow such a scholarship (in 1972?) at Bowdoin College in Yankee Maine - home of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain - unless they were deliberately thumbing their nose at the man who helped break the back of the Confederacy by honoring Constitutional law incompetent Jefferson Davis in Chamberlain's backyard.

It seems more like a weird practical joke than a scholarship.

The Jefferson Davis Award has been replaced by The Michael Moore Award.

A classy move there people (/s)

Are they going to give the money back to the UDC or just randomly eliminate the endowment’s name and keep the money?

Why would a college in Maine bestow such and award anyway? Last time I checked Maine is the most Yankee, least Southern state there is. Was there a Down East Confederacy that I don’t know about?

The annual cash award to a student of government and legal studies who excels in constitutional law was named for the Confederate president.

Oh the irony.

Bowdoin College has been on a downward death spiral for a good forty years, accelerated during the disastrous Mills regime in the 90's. No surprise they would purge themselves of the president of the confederacy. Just surprised it took them so long.

How soon will the Hate Southerner’s Movement remove all vestiges of Robert Carlyle Byrd?
I shall never fight in the armed forces with a negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.

— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1946

Yet to this day “they”, love him!

Good. Traitors and losers of failed unconstitutional rebellions do not deserve to be honored in any way....
