Obama up against growing support for a no-fly zone in Syria (Fiorina: Prepare to fight Russians)
CBS News ^ | 10/5/15 | REBECCA KAPLAN

Russia has been stepping up its involvement in the Syrian civil war - culminating in airstrikes last week that may have targeted not just ISIS, but also rebels opposing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Meanwhile, the Syrian refugee crisis continues unabated, with a massive influx of Syrians overwhelming Turkey and Europe.

To address this, lawmakers and presidential candidates alike - including the president's former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, say the U.S. should respond with a no-fly zone, which is not a tactic President Obama is willing to pursue right now.

-snip-

And in an interview on Fox News last week, Fiorina said the U.S. should secure a no-fly zone around the rebels it supports.

"This is a tricky maneuver, it's a dangerous maneuver, but it's a maneuver that we must undertake because we must make it crystal clear to Russia, they do not get to move into the Middle East," she said. As for a potential fight with the Russians, she said, "If it does come to that, I think we must be prepared."

When you get an explanation that makes sense, ping me. I’m wanting one too.

They didn’t authorize the use of force against Gadaffi.
Nor did they impeach the _resident for failing to inform them
of his intended actions.
But they did authorize the funding.

You`d be surprised at the level of support for this lunacy here on this forum. Guess they have to relive the past. ‘Those godless Rooskies are coming!”, never mind the US is now the pagan home front and the ‘Rooskies’ seem to be holding their own against the tide of progressive slime.

I expect Fiorina to put on her combat boots next time she wants to lead the troops. At one time I thought she might be a light in the dark but it appears she wants to be a stage player taking the role of Evita. I do not want to shed any tears for/on her political stage.

WHAT “growing support”??!?

From the article it appears to be two incompetent dingbats (Clintoon, Fiorina) and that drooling, senile chickenhawk McCain.

Even Sanders has sense enough not to support this noflyzone stupidity.

It's alot easier to talk tough on the campaign trail than it is to act tough as comander in chief. And we know what a girlie man Obama is.

What happens when they shoot back?

They didn't seem to worry about it when they were shooting at us over the skies of Korea or Vietnam.

Fiorina must be nuts. Down, down go her poll numbers.

Putin can do whatever the hell he wants to do in Syria, as long as he doesn’t think that applies to Israel.

There, we draw lines and fight. After Barry wanders off, that is. Until then, who knows, maybe he fights a nuclear war against the NRA and home schoolers.

The Cold War is over. We won.

The old Soviet Union is gone. It no longer has millions of slave Ukrainians, Eastern Europeans and other conscripts sitting in armored vehicles on the Elba in Germany.

Syria has been a Russian client state since the 1960s. Putin is fighting to hold what he all ready has in Syria. He not gaining anything. With the USA a exporter of oil for the 1st time in my life, there is absolutely no reason for the US to fight Russia over Syria.

I'm sorry, I don't want to fight the Russians over Assad. While I'd have supported the mission, I'm not sure I would have supported action to depose Assad, given our track record post WWII standing up friendly regiemes post hostilities. And the time has passed. Let the Russians run what's left of Syria. If we want to retain a foothold in the middle east, perhaps Iraq. Or at least stop alienation Egypt and the Gulf States. Israel, Obama has too much of a grudge to do anything there.

Whatever he does, it’ll be stupid and damaging, given his history. So better he does nothing, which might also be stupid and damaging, but at least the MSM will not keep trying to explain how wonderful his stupid, damaging move was, because he won’t have made one.

They can have him. He’s just as bad as any of the other players. Not worth locking horns with Russians over, right when the US military is in bad shape. This would be one fool’s errand too many.

What do do: Go long on corn futures. Buy more popcorn.

If we do anything at all shouldn’t it be bombing support for the Kurds on ISIS, and put the Turks on alert about where they can fly. If not that, just bring all our forces home and let Russia at it.
FUBO.

I guess she’s trying to prove she has cajones.

Of course she never will have them.

And the cajones she puts at risk with this kind of foolishness are those of our soldiers, sailors, and marines.

“They didn’t seem to worry about it when they were shooting at us over the skies of Korea or Vietnam.”

So do we bomb Russian AA sites in response—these guys are there officially, unlike Vietnam. What happens when an F-22 goes down? How badly does Russia want to be there and how badly do we want to be there.

And what’s our goal in being there? On the Obama side, I see incoherence—it seems like we are strengthening Iran and ISIS simultaneously. On the R side, I see a lot of testosterone.

The big picture, I think, is that ISIS now represents a considerably more insane that Saudi, Egypt and Jordan Sunni Axis and they hold a big chunk of land between Shia land and somewhat less insane Sunni-land. There is no somewhat-less-insane Shia-land—that is all controlled by Iran and they are nuts.

Low world oil prices depend on the somewhat less than insane Sunnis continuing to pump lots of oil.

Russia has now sent in heavy equipment and probably boots to support crazy Shia-land and, imo, to scare the somewhat-less-than-insane Sunnis into pumping less oil. This is close to existential for Russia because the existing government probably cannot hold power without high oil prices.

What’s our strategic goal and how do we get there? I don’t know the answer. But just shooting down some Russian jets seems like a very short term tactical answer to a much much bigger strategic problem.

W’s goal in Iraq may have been naive in retrospect (nation-building among a people utterly unready for a modern, self-governed society) but at least he had goals and we know we failed. Obama seem, well, incoherent. Add those together and we have the mess we are in. Right now, I don’t know what action we can take that increases the probability of a favorable result for America.

Spot on.

As for Fiorina - She’s lost ALL credibility with this. Does she know nothing?
