In this recent USA Today op ed, I explain how the unexpected success of Donald Trumps presidential campaign is in large part the result of widespread political ignorance:
Despite some recent stumbles in his campaign, the most dramatic development of the 2016 presidential race has been the meteoric ascent of Donald Trump to the status of front-runner for the Republican nomination. Trumps rise is a particularly blatant example of a much deeper problem at the heart of modern democracy: widespread voter ignorance.
Trumps success so far is in large part the result of an almost perfect storm of political ignorance. As a longtime celebrity, he had a built-in advantage with voters who dont know much about politics
Polls also consistently show that Trumps support comes disproportionately from those with relatively low levels of education. For instance, a recent ABC/Washington Post survey found that 40% of Republican-leaning voters without college degrees support Trump, compared with only 19% of college graduates. Low education correlates with support for Trump far more than political ideology, or any other demographic variable. Education and political knowledge are not the same thing
Nonetheless, the two are highly correlated....

Maybe professor it is due to these are the people most impacted by immigration, not due to their ignorance?
You don’t see any harm to yourself, so you say others are ignorant. Maybe you are the ignorant one?
Partisan Media Shills Alert!
Too many liberals confuse a college degree with intelligence and common sense, a trait no doubt learned while they were in college.
I have children, and grandchildren, with their degrees, and they have only a scant understanding of the world, and how it works. A degree is a starting point which has some advantage in today’s world in securing employment, saying that tongue-in-cheek with the record number of out-of-work grads out there.
What little common sense kids acquire in high school is brainwashed right out of them in many colleges. They become in-elitist, bowing to the perceived “coolest” of professors and liberal celebrities. They can’t go to the bathroom without an “ok” from their cult.
If “political ignorance” is an absence of how to lie, cheat, and corrupt, then “political ignorance” is a talent reserved for the wise among us, those that see life with their own eyes, and not through a textbook.
Exactly. Trump’s high numbers are not because voters are stupid but because voters have had enough of do-nothing, professional politicians.
Anyone who disagrees with the globalists and their global rule agenda is “stupid.”
Yup, we all bes ignint. I was soo ignint I went to Stanford.
That’s all they have anymore, calling the vanguard of the revolution ignorant even while we storm the palace with torches and pitchforks.
Liberal universities sowing seeds of distrust and rebellion in the name of Progress.. Thx Professor. Glad I never had kids or needed your services ..
A long time ago we had a president named Ronald. I could never get enough of Ronald. Even today, I occasionally reach into the archives and read the letters and speeches that he personally wrote. His words resonate with me.
Today I listen and watch a guy named Donald and I just can’t seem to get enough. I know that God willing he too will one day be my president. His words resonate with me.
That is how smart I am.
You have to be educated to be a libertarian for socialism like the professor, who wrote this cant.
