Scientists to see if they can save planet from asteroid

Come 2022, scientists will attempt to save all of humanity from an asteroid. Calm down, it's just a trial run. The joint US-European AIDA—that's Asteroid Deflection and Assessment—mission intends to crash a probe into a 525-foot-wide asteroid known as Didymoon to see if the impact will change its orbital path.

The egg-shaped asteroid is actually part of a binary system and orbits its larger partner, Didymos, every 12 hours, per Phys.org. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) probe will crash into Didymoon at a speed of roughly 13,420mph, while ESA's Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM) will study the effects so researchers can determine whether Didymoon's orbit was indeed altered, reports ITV News.

About time. Asteroid and comet impacts are a far more credible threat to human life on this planet than the slow changes which global warming would bring.

As soon as I saw the headline, I went to post “about time.”

“these people want a government handout”

So, you would rather see the asteroid hit the Earth?

and there was a slight miscalculation during the planned course changing crash ... Didymos will impact North America in 45 hours ... please do not panic, we have everything under control ...

At some point, that event is inevitable. Mankind might be able to detect and deflect inbound objects up to some size, but eventually one will come along that defies adequate deflection.

Meanwhile, I have no problem with, indeed, find it prudent to shield against what we can.

Yup.

Revelation 8. Tell me not to waste the money. The First Four Trumpets

6Then the seven angels with the seven trumpets prepared to blow their mighty blasts.
7The first angel blew his trumpet, and hail and fire mixed with blood were thrown down on the earth. One-third of the earth was set on fire, one-third of the trees were burned, and all the green grass was burned.

8Then the second angel blew his trumpet, and a great mountain of fire was thrown into the sea. One-third of the water in the sea became blood, 9one-third of all things living in the sea died, and one-third of all the ships on the sea were destroyed.

10Then the third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from the sky, burning like a torch. It fell on one-third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11The name of the star was Bitterness.b It made one-third of the water bitter, and many people died from drinking the bitter water.

12Then the fourth angel blew his trumpet, and one-third of the sun was struck, and one-third of the moon, and one-third of the stars, and they became dark. And one-third of the day was dark, and also one-third of the night.

It's too early to do a physics equation, but would there be enough foot -pounds of deflection from a light metallic spacecraft to budge a dense space rock over 500 feet long?

Something akin to a hummerbird flying full bore into an elephant. Would the elephant even blink?

The calculations have already been accomplished for a wide variety of scenarios. Some of the schemes even have the spacecraft touch the asteroid. They use the very slight gravitational attraction of the matter in the spacecraft to ever so slowly pull the asteroid off the original course. The drawback is the long lead time and space necessary for such an approach to work. The shorter the time and closer the approach of the asteroid before it is intercepted, the more energy which must be imparted to the asteroid to cause it to miss the Earth.

You only need to change its speed or direction by a tiny amount if you do it long enough before impact.

A few inches per second would be plenty if its 5 or 10 years before a predicted impact.

Sorry, it was supposed to say...even have the spacecraft NOT touch the asteroid.

Give me a trillion dollars and I will make the world safe again! They already have the technology in use all over the United States.
Just put a big aluminum sign on every satellite in space “This is an Asteroid Free Zone”

That’s rather interesting news. I was just watching a video yesterday about some gal name who worked with Werner Von Braun for a few years before he passed away from cancer in ‘77. He gave her five enemies of America that would pass through history that would be the excuse to create space-based weapons. One of those enemies is asteroids. Just bizarre!

1. The Red Scare from the Soviet Union.
2. Muslim terrorists
3. Third world nations
4. Asteroids
5. Aliens

So far he has been correct.

” The joint US-European AIDA—that’s Asteroid Deflection and Assessment—mission intends to crash a probe into a 525-foot-wide asteroid known as Didymoon to see if the impact will change its orbital path. “

What is that theory that if a butterfly flaps his wings it effects stuff all around the world? I wonder if that applies throughout the universe.
