CHILLICOTHE — You know the tale about the tortoise and the hare? In beating the odds, that’s nothing compared to a plucky snapping turtle in Chillicothe.

The critter was brutally stabbed through its shell and body, then survived for days — teeming with blood and maggots — before lumbering into a Chillicothe neighborhood Saturday. There, Paul and Diane Tuttle spotted the turtle a yellow screwdriver sticking out of its green shell, yet persistently plodding upon the pavement.

Who would do such a cruel thing to an animal? Paul Tuttle, an 18-year Peoria police officer, says the stabbing was no accident — no instance of hunting gone wrong.

That makes a lot of sense. actually, i dont know what the heck causes us to age. i think it has something to do with a limited number of times cells can divide in a lifetime?

Also, supposedly, Churchill's parrot is still alive.

no need to apologize but you may benefit from not explaining yourself and some of the twisted things you did as a kid to Non-Virtual folk.
They may tend to back off a bit from you.

Disclaimer: I am looking at the pond I grew up around in the 40;s and a 22 LR I had since then.About 5 squirrels and cant count the chipmunks.
Never had the desire to kill something for fun.Damage stuff OK,turtles don’t damage much.
I had some friends that did.You probably can relate.firecrackers in frogs mouths, abuse to cats and farm animals.
They turned out to be drunks hard core dopeers and eventually killed themselves, via drugs booze what ever.Good Luck

“I think most of us probably needlessly killed something when we were younger... be it a frog, bird, whatever. Most of us felt guilty and learned a tough lesson in doing so, then never did it again. The people who do this sort of thing concern me”

You’re right, and this case could just be like that. In my case it includes a frog or toad that I deliberately and pointlessly killed with my motorcycle, and a small bird that I mindlessly shot. I didn’t do it again after that, nor did I turn into a serial killer. Children (and teenagers) don’t always really think before they act, and such acts don’t necessarily indicate a craven indifference to life or suffering.

That was my first thought as well. It could have been an execution gone awry. Snappers are mean as all get out and can stretch their heads far out of their shells to grab hold...and never let go.

I wouldn't intentionally torture one, but I also wouldn't mourn one’s death.

I wouldn't stab one and leave it to die. Lot of good meat gone to waste.

I’ll take your word on the tastiness of the meat. :)

It's darned good if it's prepared right. The meat is good, but the fat is nasty and you have to make sure you trim all of it off.

police officer, says the stabbing was no accident

Maybe just Maybe the turtle was running with the screwdriver and fell and rolled over on it. Maybe the turtle owed money for some crack he had received and didn’t pay up. turtle mafia tried to rub him out.

[[Come on just a little levity for a sick situation.]

That’s impossible with the high horse crowd I’m afraid

I am not apologizing.

I have no guilt from killing pests in my pond that I swam in that would bite my finger or toe off in a second if given a chance, anymore than when I kill an ant or a roach in my kitchen.

[[good lord!!! i wonder why they live so much longer than us!!]]

Because they usually don’t play with screwdrivers- there’s always the exceptions to the rule of course

I can’t seem to get past the visual, lol. They aren’t pretty when they are “deshelled”. But I guess neither are lobster or shrimp and I can scarf them down.

[[Ummm, if it attacked someone this could be a legitimate response.]]

Exactly, but sadly many would rather a fisherman lose a couple of fingers than the man protect himself- you can see how quick people jumped on the story without knowing all the facts- lots of people just waiting in life to pounce on others I guess

sorry but the reactions here are pretty funny- nobody is advocating driving a screw driver through a turtle shell- so calm down and try to have a nice day -

I don't know if they would actually grab a human foot or something that big unless in self-defense. No idea.

Yeah, they would. When I was very small my grandfather taught me about them. Had a branch as big around as my wrist, and waved it around near an old blind snapper that lived back in the marsh behind his farm, a monster he was. That old blind turtle moved like you wouldn't believe, and clamped on right around that branch. My grandfather then told me to try to pull it free; couldn't do it, he wouldn't let go. Lesson: Either stay away from 'em, or kill 'em, but don't play around.

I remember being told to stay away from turtles because if it bit you, it wouldn’t let go until it thundered! I wonder who made that one up!

This is getting a little creepy. I though maybe the moderator might want to play too. Just got online so I am late to this near daily replay where Norm posts and HTRN flies in like a hawk on prey.

HTRN trolls Norm -

They bite at anything within reach- doesn’t matter how big- and when they get ahold of you they don’t let go easily- their jaws are like a vice- and the turtles are shockingly fast when they snap their heads out to strike too- and they can bite backwards as their necks are quite long- Best not to eaven mess with them if possible-They can sever fingers and toes-
