CHILLICOTHE — You know the tale about the tortoise and the hare? In beating the odds, that’s nothing compared to a plucky snapping turtle in Chillicothe.

The critter was brutally stabbed through its shell and body, then survived for days — teeming with blood and maggots — before lumbering into a Chillicothe neighborhood Saturday. There, Paul and Diane Tuttle spotted the turtle a yellow screwdriver sticking out of its green shell, yet persistently plodding upon the pavement.

Who would do such a cruel thing to an animal? Paul Tuttle, an 18-year Peoria police officer, says the stabbing was no accident — no instance of hunting gone wrong.

Yep, same here.

I am bemused that the slaughter itself failed to raise a fuss even approaching that which selling some of the slaughter products did. Which is worse? Show me, genius. Where were you doing anything, beyond patting yourself on the back, about abortion itself? And no, voting for politicians who cannot win does not count.

Sounds like you have demonstrated yourself to be chief of flaunting little things and ignoring larger ones.

When you claim something, that is pretty good empirical proof it isn’t true.

So back up that claim with examples of all my errors. To date you have yet to produce one.

You have had them amply spelled out but all you have done is go la la la you can’t hear me and claim how awesome you are.

I submit my case to a candid FR. Not to you!

I've no way of knowing what happend here, but when I was young my dad signed me up to spend a couple of summers working for some commercial fisherman that used some land my dad owned on the Mississippi River in Wisconsin.

One of the first things I learned was to stay away from snapping turtles. They can be quite fast in attacking something and once they get a hold of whatever they grab at, it's screwed. They don't let go without the proper encouragement which usually involves cutting the head off or shooting the thing and then prying the jaws open if you still have what it grabbed in the first place.

As I said, I've no idea what happened, but I would just as easily believe that the turtle got that screwdriver as a result of it attacking someone as it was the result of being attacked by a future pedophile.

Ummm, if it attacked someone this could be a legitimate response. About the only way to get them to let go is cut the head off, and they can do serious damage.

Time to push for gunscrewdriver control laws. I don't trust those wiley little tools. They're dangerous and have a thing against turtles. Ban 'em. <sarc>

Man really? Not one post to say: boy that turtle is screwed!

Come on just a little levity for a sick situation. Can’t let ourselves be completely sullen. Besides the ol’ girl is expected to fully recover. Tough reptile.

Is it named Hillary?

Might have been a pissed-off fisherman. They’ll eat the fish off of your stringer.

On a somewhat related subject, a lot of people seem to find something funny about roadkill. I consider it sad, if sometimes unavoidable. I wouldn’t endanger myself or others to avoid hitting an animal on the road, but will try to avoid it if possible.
