Reports show tents trapped Boy Scouts during deadly flooding

Deadly floodwaters that tore through a Boy Scout troop's New Mexico campsite as they slept turned their tents into wet cages that clung to their bodies like saran wrap, newly released police reports and taped interviews show.

The group of eight California boys and their chaperones fought desperately to escape, some using their teeth to rip holes in their tents.

"You could hear people yelling, but you couldn't understand what they were saying," Michael Evans, one of the adults, told police of the chaos that June night.

If they had had knives, they might have hurt themselves.

Well during the night they probably didn’t have good orientation to get any knives they may have had. It was sort of a freak occurrence.

I never had an official Boy Scout knife, but I did always have at least one in my pocket, usually a bigger one in a sheath as well. I don’t know of anyone in our troop that didn’t have a knife. That’s part of the Boy Scout motto, be prepared. How the hell do you do a lot of things a Boy Scout needs to do in the woods without a knife?

If you need to start a fire, they allow you 2 matches. You can use your knife to shave off slivers of wood and bark if you can’t find much small stuff to get started with. Skin a rabbit or filet a fish for dinner. Cut your tent rope.

Crazy to think Boy Scouts didn’t have knives...I’m sure being caught in a flood would be disorienting to say the least, but I like to think I would have the presence of mind to pull out a knife long before I’d try chewing my way out of a tent...then again I don’t panic easy...

The group was camping about 20 feet upslope from a small creek, but the water overran their campsite.

20' is basically beside the creek. Washes and creeks in the SW are deadly, because they are so flat and because there is no vegetation to hold rain.

How terrible.

Thinking back to my ancient days of scouting we had only canvas tents without sewn in floors. Convience can be deadly.

RIP lads.

We had old military surplus half-shelters. Each Scout carried his half of the tent and they buttoned together along the ridge. We got really good at setting those things up.

I remember the smell of the canvas on a hot afternoon.

They obviously didn’t dig the proper little drainage ditch all around the perimeter of their tent like the handbook shows. I remember a couple of boy scout campouts with really bad storms, high winds, etc. but we got through and afterwards the leader made us doughnuts. Later we found out he was a queer and us scouts were told he was just no longer our leader for mysterious reasons that were none of our beeswax.

Ah, the good old days, when we lived on lumps of sugar fried in grease and queers were shunned instead of celebrated.

We are talking about kids. I’m not sure how many kids would have a presence of mind in something like that.

I remember digging those. They were basically for keeping puddles from gathering, not stopping a flash flood.

I sleep with a knife. Literally, I have a pocket knife clipped on my sleep pants. I sleep on my back, so it isn’t uncomfortable or in the way... Always have a knife, always.

I remember my brother opening up his knife to cut the back of the tent to “escape” a black bear messing with some stuff at our campsite. “Oh no you don’t! I still have another ten days out here!” (We went out the front and started banging stuff and making noise.)

If they had knives, they could fight off their sodomite scoutmasters.
