I sleep with a knife. Literally, I have a pocket knife clipped on my sleep pants. I sleep on my back, so it isn’t uncomfortable or in the way... Always have a knife, always.
I remember my brother opening up his knife to cut the back of the tent to “escape” a black bear messing with some stuff at our campsite. “Oh no you don’t! I still have another ten days out here!” (We went out the front and started banging stuff and making noise.)

I don’t remember ever using a tent when I was in the Boy Scouts.
We built a lean-to or just hung a tarp if rain threatened.
Or just huddled under a poncho if we weren’t actually encamped.
