Carly Fiorina: Why She Wants Everyone to Throw Out Their Flip Phones
ABC News ^ | Sept 28, 2015 | JORDYN PHELPS

Posted on 09/28/2015 7:28:07 AM PDT by McGruff

It’s all part of a vision the Republican presidential candidate has to give citizens a direct line of communication – literally – to the president. But the technology, Fiorina says, will only be compatible with smartphones.

“I will go into the Oval Office on a regular basis, I will ask you to take out your smartphones, and I will engage in a conversation with the citizens of this nation,” the former Hewlett-Packard CEO, who has seen her poll numbers rise following a strong performance in the past two GOP debates, tells the audience.

Mao and Stalin would have LOVED this.

Instant decrees and commands to the peons.

And probably a little tracking.

And then using phone as ID, it can be shut off to stop your transactions.

It is a radio used to make phone calls, much like a POTS based hard wired phone , but without the wires.

She wants folks to use those new pocket pleasure devices that also make phone calls.

Exactly. I wish I had my old Nokia brick back. That thing was only slightly less durable than an anvil.

“If you want a phone, you can get a flip phone with unlimited minutes for $60/month from Verizon or other provider. This obsession with Iphones is just stupid.”

We pay $55/mo. to Verizon for 2 flip phones, unlimited text, and 700 talk minutes. If talking with other Verizon customers, those minutes are free and not included in the 700.

...a direct line of communication -- literally -- to the president... will only be compatible with smartphones.
Odd, since it's apparent she doesn't even listen to herself.

Funny. That's exactly why I have one. Plus my LG VX-8300 simply won't die. It's a rock.

Me too - I am a computer tech, and were I to go down the SmartPhone trail, I would get nothing done at all... As it is, it takes me most of the morning to get out the door - spending most of my time answering mails, texts, and posts, while starting pre-scan and bench-work in the office. Once I finally get out the door, my available free time greatly expands, as I will stop to catch messages and return calls only about three times during the length of the afternoon.

I don't know how SmartPhone users can cope with the volume.

I don't know how SmartPhone users can cope with the volume.

Nor do I. But I know how they CAN. Turn the damned things off. Schedule time to catch up. Stay off Twitter. That's it. But...turning their smart phones off is akin to chopping off a thumb. They can't do it.

As I drive around, seeing so many people with phones glued to their ear, I shake my head. Why can't these people turn off the phone until they reach their destination? Why endanger yourself and others for some (most likely) useless conversation? Do they not realize that voice mail works when the phone is off? I'll bet there is a large percentage of lusers who don't.

I won't have a smart phone!!

Ours are flip phones and we have messaging blocked.

I call out or someone can call in and if I don't answer they can leave voice message.

The “throw out your flip phones” is an attempt at a humorous way to explain this plan.

BRING OUT YER FLIP PHONES!

I kind of figured out the same. I have access to the Internet where I live, I have it where I work, and can have access elsewhere if I need it.

Still have a flip phone too...

Me too. The flip phone fits in my jeans pocket when I go riding horses. If I was thrown and still conscious, I could dial it by feel of the buttons. It also puts the speaker at my ear when my mouth is at the mike.

It was $10, plus $80/year. I’ll be damned if I need the Internet 24/7.

Good points, both of you. And, yes, I occasionally get static from the 24/7 crowd who think I should be at their beck and call 24/7. I simply tell them that the cell phone in my vehicle (or when traveling) is for my convenience and not the convenience of those calling me.
