Trump: GOP rivals 'want to start WWIII over Syria,' should let Russia fight Islamic State

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump shared more of his views on foreign policy Friday, telling an audience in Oklahoma his 2016 rivals want to “start World War III over Syria” and suggesting the U.S. let Russia take up the fight against the Islamic State in the region.

“They want to start World War III over Syria. Give me a break,” Mr. Trump said at the State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City, The Hill reported.

“You know Russia wants to get ISIS right,” Mr. Trump said, using the acronym for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. “We want to get ISIS. Russia’s in Syria. Maybe we should let them do it? Let them do it. What the hell are we, crazy?”

Mr. Trump’s remarks come as Russia is increasing its military forces in Syria, a move which has alarmed U.S. military and administration officials.

I’m not a fan o’ Trump but I think I have to agree with him. We certainly can’t send our boys over there to fight a 3 or 4 way war.

Assad is a scumbag but honestly, Iraq would be better off if Saddam were still alive. Let Putin (also a scumbag) prop up Assad.

Russia is just going to be an ISIS target with the 200 troops and 6 tanks they have in Syria.

Assad has already lost most of his country, he won’t be able to take it back with that assistance.

ISIS is already using it for recruiting, Muslims from the Caucasus and Chechnya are heading there literally looking for Russian heads.

Obama is trying to finesse ISIS and it’s not going to end well.

Iraq was only at relative peace because US troops kept the lid on everything.

You mean like keeping the peace between the two Koreas in the DMZ ? We are still there after what 60 years.

Iraq is not Viet Nam. I will not go there. But if you insist, pulling out of Viet Nam was a win for China and Russia. Now Russia and China are in Syria.

We don’t have to get used to it. We don’t have to give all these third world countries money. You know foreign aid. We start expecting respectful behavior and something in return. Like a naive female who proves her love to some dick, gives it all up for jack. That’s how this political hacks have been running the country. Time for a huge change.

No matter what we do, we will get bit in the ass by Jihadists. Do you really think they will stop targeting us with us leaving the Mid East with the tail between our legs a la Obama? Really?

I have know Idea how the U.S. puts itself in a stronger diplomatic/military position after the Obama Debacle. The U.S. will be hurting for years to come.

Actually, yes, that was my point. The only way to keep the peace in Iraq (as a whole) would be to station large numbers of soldiers there for decades, like in Korea.

But Iraq would have been more difficult than Korea. There are no tribal tensions within South Korea, and our troops there are not subject to random car-bombings.

Would the troop commitment have been worth it, in the Iraqi case? I don't know, but I blame W for getting us involved there in the first place. And I don't blame Obama for ordering a pullout. But I do know one thing. I sure hate defending one of Obama's moves. However, I must call 'em as I see 'em.

Russia has dropped a significant amount of personnel and hardware in Syria. They’ve established an SLOC and an ALOC. I don’t think they’re there for limited contingency operations.

They may get chewed up like they did in Afghanistan, but no matter who loses, we win, as they grind each other down.

With the Epic Failure of Obama’s foreign policy, the US has no power perch. NONE. NADA. The U.S. had a say but after the withdrawal of our Troops in Iraq, the Egypt debacle, the Libya debacle, the Benghazi debacle the Iran Deal debacle the U.S. has lost all its power. None of the above is Bush's responsibility. It is all on Obama’s watch.

There is that old rule, possession is nine tenths of the law. Well, with the withdrawal of U.S. Troops from Iraq and all the debacles listed above, we have no say. Can't wait until we leave the Straight of Hormuz.

Let's be clear: The US has been consistently against Assad, and will not support him even against ISIS. That is why we indulge the stupid quixotic fantasies of arming a "moderate" force to fight both. No sane human being thinks that will work, but it is the official US foreign policy nonetheless.

I love how he went after the idiot Fio-RINO’s “send out the 6th Fleet” comment from the debate. He is 100% right. We got NOTHING out of all the dead and the trillions spent for the Bush Crime Family in Iraq. We killed the wrong guy. We toppled the wrong government. Now the Chinese and Iranians will benefit while we get bupkis.

We will have to disagree on W's level of responsibility for this current mess. But I will certainly agree with your comment above.

Obama took a bad situation and has made it worse. After Vietnam, the US was exhausted, but we were not weak, and we did not look weak. Today we look weak.

Russia lost in Afghanistan because the US supplied the rebels with material support including Stinger missiles that neutralized the Soviet Air force, especially their powerful attack helicopters. That would be a very unfortunate precedent on which to base assumptions about current events, since there is a vacuum now where the US once stood.

Russian military will have learned lessons in Chechnya and will not lose to irregulars again.

Putin has put 200 ground troops, 6 T-90 tanks and support crews and pilots for the couple dozen military aircraft and helicopters.

That’s not nearly enough to stop ISIS let alone turn them back.

The big problem will come when those troops with their lousy discipline start wandering away from their bases out of boredom and get nabbed by ISiS.

I think what Trump said is the only thing we can do. This entire situation came about because of Obama’s actions. He made Assad weak enough for ISIS to take root but backed off on his bellicose “red line” proclamation and let Assad survive. Obama created a vacuum and Putin filled it. There will be many more Obama created messes for the next guy to deal with that will come up in the next year. I honestly don’t see what we can do in this situation, short of fighting Russia, except let Russia deal with ISIS. Recognizing reality on the ground is a plus for a candidate in my view. What would you do? Fight the Russian over ISIS?

Well, no. Bush did a lot that was poorly thought out and poorly executed, but by 2009 the Mid East was stable, relatively peaceful, and under control. ISIS didn't exist. Obama campaigned in 2012 on how successful the region had become!

In 2011, just for grins, The National Geographic did a big feature complete with the usual pictures, of "the new Baghdad," complete with the obligatory night club scenes and farmers' markets amid the blast walls.

That was Obama's rationale for ignoring Bush's prescient warnings and pulling out our insurance policy (troops) instead of negotiating a SoFA when the previous one expired.

Bush made his share of errors but the current chaos is pure Obama all the way.
