Have Evangelicals Who Support Trump Lost Their Values?
nytimes.com ^ | SEPT. 17, 2015 | RUSSELL MOORE

IN 2006, the television comedy “The Office” aired an episode in which one of the characters, Dwight Schrute, nervously faces the prospect of delivering a speech after winning the title of top salesman of the year for his company, Dunder Mifflin. As a prank, his co-worker preps him for his moment by cribbing a speech from a dictator, coaching him to deliver it by pounding the lectern and waving his arms wildly. Dwight does it, and the audience gives a standing ovation to a manic tirade.

Watching a cartoonish TV character deliver authoritarian lines with no principles, just audacity, was hilarious back then, but that was before we saw it happening before our eyes in the race for the United States presidency.

Donald J. Trump stands astride the polls in the Republican presidential race, beating all comers in virtually every demographic of the primary electorate. Most illogical is his support from evangelicals and other social conservatives. To back Mr. Trump, these voters must repudiate everything they believe.

trump is a fraud and a huckster and working for the rats....

the trump love fest here on a traditional patriotic Christian conservative site is insane...

I pledge to vote for whomever the pub candidate is, but I would much rather have a leader such as Cruz or Rubio or a simply good man in Ben Carson.

Covered the atrocities at PP in detail yet NY Slimes?

Utterly absurd for anyone at the NY Times to lecture anyone about “Values”.

Yes.somewhat. They are more than willing to overlook Donald Trump’s record because he says he will build a wall. Trump says what the evangelicals want to hear, never mind that the current president is there for that very reason. They are blinded.

They? Thus, YOU are not an Evangelical Christian, one may presume. Any chance you are not fully informed regarding OUR thinking in this matter.

Rabid blind hate for Trump is hardly a “Christian” value.

So far all the people who claim to be Christians keep leaving the border open. And they have failed to de-fund Planned Parenthood after knowing what they do for a living. And they have failed to protect the basic moral foundation of the country.

And they make treasonous deals with Iran that sell out both Israel and our own security.

Roughly 90% of black voters voted for Obama. A large portion of them claimed to know Christ. Obama is diametrically opposed to everything you’d expect them to value. Has the author every asked them, “How can you possibly justify voting for such a man or for liberal Democrats in general?”

Yes, I never see the Slimes show such concern for the doctrinal purity of Nancy Pelosi and the likes, but now with Pope Francis, that may not be a problem for much longer.

I don’t know who you think you are talking about. You should be more specific. I suspect that the great majority of believers strongly support de-funding Planned Parenthood, protecting the border, and realize that the Iran deal is a knife at the throat of the US and Israel. I certainly oppose these things and other believers I’ve talked to also oppose them. If you are putting back-stabbing RINO politicians in the camp with most believers, then you have missed the mark. “By their fruits, ye shall know them.” Their actions speak volumes.

I forget where I read this, some article recently. But it said, "At this point evangelicals just want someone who doesn't hate them." After all these years of Obama, I think that's about it.

I agree with you on the personal level good spiritual leaders can be everything in people’s lives.
They have a power position in people who openly trust them.

Presidents either lead or stink from the head and can end a country like Obama has been doing, so they can be of the most importance in a whole other way.

. . . a dictator . . . pounding the lectern and waving his arms wildly . . . the problem is not just Mr. Trump’s personal lack of a moral compass . . . [who] built his career off gambling [and when his] casinos fail[ed], he [would] simply file bankruptcy [ignoring the] lives and families destroyed . . . .

You dumped the wrong snark (on Trump). The snark du jour is Trump is behaving like a spoiled eight-year-old brat. Get with it, Nytimese.

Besides your governor has already made it clear about them evangelicals.

From recent news: "[New York governor] Andrew Cuomo: Pro-life people [and the like] not welcome in New York . . . ."

I thought the fair and open minded, intellectually pure liberals had already made it clear that such riffraff is not welcome in their free and open, freedom-loving America.
