California’s Climate Change Revolt
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 11, 2015 | Editorial

Posted on 09/12/2015 4:39:06 PM PDT by Brad from Tennessee

The environmental lobby has tried to turn climate change into a social justice issue even though its anticarbon policies disproportionately harm the poor. Honest Democrats are starting to admit this, as we saw in this week’s stunning revolt in the California legislature.

Jerry Brown doesn’t have much to show for his second turn in Sacramento, and of late he has focused his legacy attention on reducing carbon emissions. The Governor hailed California as a model of green virtue at the Vatican this summer and had hoped to flaunt sweeping new anticarbon regulations at the U.N’s climate-change summit in Paris this year.

But now his party has mutinied. Democrats hold near supermajorities in both legislative chambers with 52 of 80 seats in the Assembly. Yet this week 21 Democratic Assembly members representing middle- and low-income communities—including 11 blacks and Latinos—joined Republicans to kill a bill mandating a cut in state greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.

Democrats also forced Mr. Brown to scrap a measure that would have given the California Air Resources Board plenary authority to reduce statewide oil consumption in vehicles by half by 2030. Imagine the EPA without the accountability. “One of the implications probably would have been higher gas prices,” noted Democratic Assemblyman Jim Cooper. “Who does it impact the most? The middle class and low-income folks.”

The defeat is all the more striking for the failure of appeals to green moral superiority. Liberal groups targeted Catholic Democrats with ads featuring Pope Francis. Mr. Brown demonized oil companies for selling a “highly destructive” product. . .

We have an utter and complete fool as a governor in Sacramento, akin to the feckless fool on the hill.

Not a bit. He's a crook, not a fool. Between real estate developers like Richard Blum and Eli Broad looking to build insta-cities in the Sacramento San Joaquin Valley along their high speed rail corridor, to the energy barons of the NRDC (that own elements of both parties in California), Agenda 21 is the gift that keeps on giving.

“BTW, how has California’s strict environment policies helped their climate?”

Interestingly, I have seen in reported here that we are having a hard time increasing the quality of our air because the bad air/ozone whatever actually drifts over from China.

Don’t know if it’s true but we do live on a globe and air does not respect our boundary lines.

Why do liberals want to kill the plants?

They are into "angst" and "deep emotion" and really get a kick out of hearing the agonizing whimper of starving broccoli. Some especially sadistic liberals have even advocated starving arugula of its essential nutrient!

I don't have to imagine. The EPA has no accountability.

SB 350 was a disaster from the get go. Funny how little attention was paid to this bill until the last minute. This bill would kill jobs and kill our food supplies. But, Jerry wants his meth express bullet trains running from nowhere to nowhere, another disaster waiting to happen.

It ASTOUNDS ME that Republicans have SO MUCH TROUBLE understanding just how far left the Democrats are.

Be it ‘gay marriage’, giving Iran nukes, Open Borders, there’s really no end to it.

...and now this. Even with this STUNNING REBUKE of their own leadership by DEMOCRAT representatives, Republicans will still continue to think that they only way to reach voters is to also push Global Warming ‘solutions’, just not quite as harshly.

Republicans are TOTAL IDIOTS...with one exception.

Thanks. I was wondering where the real payoff was for democRATs in the high speed rail scam beyond the contractors building the rails, stations, and trains.

California loves to punish homeowners and taxpayers in the quest for a “perfect” environment by enacting endless, dubious regulations filled with good intentions.

We’re attempting to add a small addition to our home in Campbell. There are a myriad of hoops we have to jump through involving extra time and money begging for permission from the planning commission before we can even submit plans to the building department. We’ve paid our indulgences and are not praying for mercy on our souls.

We received a bid to replace our roof. Part of the proposal stated the roofing company will “Provide a third party lead based paint test on all exterior surfaces of the house as required by the EPA” WTF? We repainted the whole dang house last year and I can be 100% sure it was not lead paint......The spiderweb of regulations is never ending. Talk about the death of a thousand cuts. Of course any complaint I make is greeted with “What, you don’t want a safe home/community/environment???”

If it weren’t for jobs and family and another 7 or 8 years until retirement we’d be outta here, though the tentacles of good intentions reach everywhere......

So if Brown and Obama are both fools, what does that make of those who voted for them?

Simple question. Ignorant fools. California is so saturated with these ignorant jackasses that we have become the communists Democrat capital of America. And known as the Northern Twanaaanaaaa of Mexicooooooo.

They set the whole thing up with the delta smelt making tons of farmland worthless. The big guys buy, set aside lots of it as "conservation easements" so that nobody else can build, and then squeeze people out of the burbs, for which grizzly bears and wolves will do very nicely, especially in open country such as Napa or Sonoma County.

Re: “Democrats also forced Mr. Brown to scrap a measure that would have given the California Air Resources Board plenary authority to reduce statewide oil consumption in vehicles by half by 2030.”

California air standards already require specialized refineries to produce custom blends of gasoline.

If you own one of those refineries are you going to upgrade your equipment or invest in R&D when the governor has vowed to destroy your business in 15 years?

Are you going to build a new gas station or upgrade the one you already own?

California already has the most expensive gasoline in the country.

And it’s going to get way more expensive and way more difficult to buy in the future.

Since California has banned new nuke and new coal generators, where is all the electric power for electric vehicles going to come from?

Utah. They will build all the power plants necessary and sell power to California....with a 50-percent profit ratio figured into the cost.
