Muslim Flight Attendant Says She Was Suspended For Refusing To Serve Alcohol

(CNN)A Muslim flight attendant says she was suspended by ExpressJet for refusing to serve alcohol in accordance with her Islamic faith.
In a bid to get her job back, Charee Stanley filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Tuesday for the revocation of a reasonable religious accommodation.
She wants to do her job without serving alcohol in accordance with her Islamic faith -- just as she was doing before her suspension, her lawyer said.
"What this case comes down to is no one should have to choose between their career and religion and it's incumbent upon employers to provide a safe environment where employees can feel they can practice their religion freely," said Lena Masri, an attorney with Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Stanley, 40, started working for ExpressJet nearly three years ago. About two years ago she converted to Islam. This year she learned her faith prohibits her from not only consuming alcohol but serving it, too, Masri said.
She approached her supervisor on June 1 and was told to work out an arrangement for someone to fulfill passenger requests for alcohol.

What is the difference between this incident and the Kim Davis case?
Both have taken a stand on their beliefs. Kim has the Constitution backing her (I think) and this woman is standing on the koran.
They weren’t asking her to drink it....
Would this apply to say baking wedding cakes or issuing marriage licenses? If not, why not?
There are myriad issues involved. Trying to help her find room for her to stay away from what she sees as sinful alcohol would be the high road. Could she serve for an Islamic airline?
Also Kim was not fired so that’s a different question.
She “converted” after she was hired. She knew she’d have to serve alcoholic beverages when she took the job.
This is another Islamic “nudge” towards US recognition of Sharia Law.
The woman should be fired with prejudice!
American tradition has long been to try to accommodate non mainstream beliefs. Key word is try, there are some things that won’t work no matter how much juggling takes place. This might be one of them.
She knew the requirements going in.
I think they should let all their muslimemployees go. They dont want them to have to touch alcool, be around gay male flight atendants, where over 80% of them are if theyre a guy, and they dont want them to touch meals that may have pork in them. So we are letting you go out of respect for your faith. Bye.

Wonder how THIS will turn out. I wonder if someone would get on the plane and DEMAND that this one person serve them alcohol instead of getting alcohol from someone who has no problem serving it.

Actually its a twofer: She can work for Saudia, and during layovers she can also pound sand.
Oh. That makes perfect sense.
This is why more and more employers have figured out that the best business practice is to avoid hiring anybody.
