Donald Trump, Alabama and the ghost of George Wallace
Politico ^ | 08/21/2015 | BEN SCHRECKINGER

MOBILE, Ala. — It was immigration, not segregation, that brought some 20,000 southerners — far fewer than predicted — out for Donald Trump on Friday night, but the ghost of George Wallace loomed large.

Wallace, an avowed segregationist, was the last presidential candidate to win electoral votes as a third-party candidate. The threat of Trump doing so, propelled by a hardline immigration stance that many have condemned as racist, looms over the Republican Party now as it did over the Democratic Party then, even as the enthusiasm of his following, for once, fell far short of expectations.

Wallace carried five Southern states, and Trump, who is leading early national polls in the race for the Republican nomination, touted his leads in Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida and Texas.

Trump also panned birthright citizenship as a bad deal for the U.S., saying, “We’re the only place just about that’s stupid enough to do it.” Trump’s recently released immigration plan calls for ending birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants, which is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, according to the legal consensus, though Trump disputes that point.

Trump invited Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, one of Congress’s most ardent immigration hardliners who helped the businessman craft his immigration plan, to the podium, where the two embraced.

He also attacked his favorite punching bag, former Florida governor Jeb Bush, on the issue. “ Jeb Bush, ugh,” said Trump, pausing for dramatic effect, before calling the former governor “totally in favor of Common Core, weak on immigration.”

Praising a woman who had brought Trump’s book “Art of the Deal” to the rally, he said, “I’ve got to get her the hell out of here, she’s so beautiful.”

Only in Politico would a writer use the phrase "only 20,000" to describe the number of people to show up for Trump's Alabama rally. The comments section on the original article are worth a read. Almost all the commenters are saying the writer of this hit piece has gone too far, too far for even Politico.

Someone tell polutico that we arent buying. I’m not a Trump fan and I would recommend he start suing these people. Calling one a racist by association is actionable for a man with 10 billion to spend on his defense. He can break them financially and should.

Cause that sXit is just wrong.

None of these liberal accounts mentions that there were severe thunderstorms in the area that kept the crowd down. It was remarkable that that many people braved the prospect of torrential rain and lightning to sit for hours waiting for Trump. Trump was right in pointing out the dishonesty of the political media that is campaigning for the Democrats.

Just like with the homosexual movement. Trying to make the plight of illegal alien criminals on par with the civil rights movement.

BTW Pollutico - Wallace was a Democrat.

And what was the temperature last night? While the Alabamians looked cool I noticed New York Trump looked hot as hell! Must have been uncomfortable for him. I actually thought he looked his age last night.

Almost all the commenters are saying the writer of this hit piece has gone too far, too far for even Politico.

And when Trump is attacked by the Jurassic media like the networks or CNN or MSNBC or Politico - it only helps him. Same thing when he's attacked by the GOP establishment and establishment media - makes him stronger.

I think there are several wide open avenues to go at Trump from the right - that could hurt him, but these attacks from the left and the center only grow his support. And that alone makes this ride worth it.

I suspect that black people in Alabama are getting along better than those in many northern states.

20 or 30 either one is impressive and has the other candidates shuffling. I can also tell you from experience that crowd size estimates are indeed part of the game the media plays.

One example...I was handling media for a Presidential state campaign, and we hosted Marilyn Quayle at a rally. There were about 600 people there....and I had to negotiate the crowd size with the reporters - holding access over their heads - to get a reported 3-400 turn out. They wanted to call it 100-200.

It’s part of their schtick. They also use photographic angles to make the crowd look small too. For Democrats, it’s just the opposite.

See, we can agree.....when you’re right.

it’s a good thing that there were only 20,000 Southerners ...

what it had been 20,000 German Green Party folks for a May Day celebration ?

would the MSM be writing about a “dark night made even darker by the flaming torches and the singing of ancient German songs, akin to a Hitler Youth Rally in 1934” ?

.

It’s not just the media over-estimating commie crowds and underestimating conservative crowds. In this case, it’s also failing to point out that Mobile isn’t that big, less than 200k people. So a crowd 10-20% of the total population is HUGE.

Two memes here:

1) Trump is George Wallace

2) 20,000 people is a negligible amount.

Seems that the media fawned all over itself when Sanders got that many.

So how many people is Jeb bringing out? Cruz is by far the closest, averaging several thousand at his smaller events.
