Underestimating Ted Cruz is a mistake
Gulf News ^ | August 19, 2015 | Albert Hunt, The Washington Post

If the US Republican presidential candidate falls short this time, some sources close to him say,
he figures the Democrats will win the presidency. Then he picks up the pieces afterwards.

Ted Cruz is a man with a plan. The United States Republican presidential candidate, bete noire of his party’s establishment, has carefully calculated a path to becoming the right-wing standard-bearer.

That makes him the most underestimated candidate in the field.

Cruz is rising in some polls and attracting more attention after the Republican debates in Cleveland on August 6. The chattering class focused more on how well John Kasich, Carly Fiorina, Marco Rubio or Ben Carson did in those encounters, along with the confounding staying power of Donald Trump.

But Cruz, whose political cunning equals his sharp intellect, may have laid the best foundation for advancing in this wide-open race. He touched all the conservative erogenous zones at the Cleveland forum and strategically refuses to say anything negative about Trump, the front-runner in early national polls.

Cruz relishes attacking his own party leaders. This makes him unpopular with congressional colleagues and other Republican eminences, but it delights many conservatives. He sees opportunities to delight them even more this fall with battles over spending and the debt ceiling. After debt-ceiling disputes shut down the government in 1995 and 2013, leaving Republicans reeling politically, party leaders want to avoid them. Not Cruz; for him, shutdown talk is a chance to thrill activists.

There’s a reason he’s avoided criticising Trump and has been solicitous of Carson....

Maybe the best thing about a Trump/Cruz ticket would be the odious US Senate facing Cruz as its new president, presiding over its proceedings.

Richard Nixon had just turned 40 when he was sworn in as VP in 1953 under Eisenhower.

“99% agreement. The only thing is that I don’t think we have an option for 4 years later. If the demo win, there is no 4 years later for America.”

Excellent observation. I suspect this is exactly why Trump entered the race. He doesn’t want to have all that he worked for, and the country that makes it possible, go up in smoke.

I’m not sure exactly what was discussed in that private Trump-Cruz meeting, but obviously one of the agreements arrived at between the two was to for some kind of alliance, the least of which was to refrain from attacking each other.

??? Dan Quayle was 43 in 1989, his first year as VP. I’m missing your point.. Completely.

I don’t know if Cruz wants to be linked with VP Quayle :). And though it would be a formidable ticket, Trump/Cruz, I’m not sure that is the best place for Cruz’ talents. Perhaps staying in Senate and keeping things stirred there with an effort to make Senate majority leader, then run for President next time, or be AG, clean up/out DOJ, then run for Pres.

What an absolutely GLORIOUS thing that would be!

Wait till they see a Trump-Cruz ticket formally announced. A cleanup crew will be needed.

Don’t be so sure. Dan Quayle is a pretty smart guy, and is, or was way to the right of his former boss.

If Biden was treated 1/10 the way Quayle was by the MSM he’d be wearing a red nose, and floppy shoes, opening shopping malls.

I find the notion of man the caliber of Cruz veeping for a reality show star to be preposterous.

Trump is a better candidate than Cruz.

Ted has a whiny voice and comes off like Eddie Haskell, not a leader.

I am 99% sure Cruz will team up with Trump. Somewhat begrudgingly Cruz will take the VP slot but they BOTH have the same goal and that’s what’s most important. It will be a Trump/Cruz ticket and make no mistake, Trump’s celebrity status and his following from The Apprentice will include a strong percentage of would-be Hillary voters.

Or he could be the next US Attorney General or even a Supreme Court justice. In fact, he could as Vice President be tasked with generating the lists of judicial appointments for Trump to nominate to the federal courts. Trump could run with Cruz as VP, and if a Supreme Court vacancy were to arise, appoint Cruz to the Supreme Court. Since there is the 25th amendment to fill the Vice Presidency in case there is a vacancy, there is no need for him to serve the entire term as VP if better opportunities arrive.

Remember, Ted Cruz is only 44 years old. I don’t remember anyone looking at me for vice president back when I was 44, do you?

Nixon was 39 when he ran in 1952.

I had my suspicions too, but Cruz has met with Trump privately and apparently he's 'thumbs up' for Trump! HEY, I JUST MADE A CAMPAIGN SLOGAN:

THUMBS UP FOR TRUMP!

I think he’s just being cognizant of Trump’s fan club and doesn’t wanna run afoul of y’all. I don’t see him dropping out to veep for him.

Joining ‘Team Trump’ is not really “dropping out”, is it?

He’s running for President, Cruz is. If he stops for any reason, that’s dropping out. That’s what the term means. And he’s not gonna do it to be Mr. Apprentice’s hypothetical running mate.
