The War on Air Conditioning Heats Up Is Climate Control Immoral?
FEE ^ | 13 Aug 15 | SARAH SKWIRE

Posted on 08/14/2015 10:00:59 AM PDT by rey

It started with the pope. In his recent encyclical, Laudato Si’, he singled out air conditioning as a particularly good example of wasteful habits and excessive consumption that overcome our better natures:

People may well have a growing ecological sensitivity but it has not succeeded in changing their harmful habits of consumption which, rather than decreasing, appear to be growing all the more. A simple example is the increasing use and power of air-conditioning.

Now, it seems to be open season on air conditioning. From a raging Facebook debate over an article that claims that air conditioning is an oppressive tool of the patriarchy to an article in the Washington Post that calls the American use of air conditioning an “addiction” and compares it unfavorably to the European willingness to sweat through the heat of summer, air conditioning is under attack. So I want to defend it.

Understand that when I defend air conditioning, I do so as something of a reluctant proponent. I grew up in the Midwest, and I have always loved sitting on the screened-in porch, rocking on the porch swing, drinking a glass of something cold. I worked in Key West during the summer after my sophomore year of college, lived in an apartment with no air conditioning, and discovered the enormous value of ceiling fans. A lazy, hot summer day can be a real pleasure.

My body has poor heat management. I get hot easily, and don’t wear much during the winter because it makes me really fatigued.

However out here in humid and high alergen Washington DC, I consider AC as a necessity if I’m going to have clear sinuses and few headaches. And, as I’ve grown older, my reaction to the pollen out here has increased.

A/C has likely saved countless lives in regard to respiratory infections, severe allergies which can also mean respiratory infections, Asthma, and helps keep molds, mildew, and bacterias under control. In my neck of the woods east Tennessee about 95% probably have and use A/C.

It would be hilarious though if A/C were cut off to large facilities like The Vatican, government offices especially the larger multi story ones for about a day. The ones working inside would be falling on their blessed assurances from the condensate on the tiled concrete floors.

A Outside of power consumption {far less than heating BTW} which thanks to technology has been lowered to about a third in may homes there is no significant environmental impact. None Nada. Air Condition is simply the removal of heat transferred to another location. It's the exact same principle and system that is used in common residential and commercial refrigeration. I used to work on A/C systems with 300 plus tons cooling capacity.

My allergy doctor is a huge supporter of A/C and good high quality air filters. I look forward to a return of late fall and winter outdoor temperatures so I can once again go outside and enjoy it.

That will kill off the frail elderly, something the left has always wanted to do anyway.

I would say probably 32 inches maybe a bit more. Wouldn’t take much to place a spacer in the area needed to be filled in. I would use something like Luan, 1/4 plywood, or if it gets hit by rain perhaps plexiglass.

If you are interested, FReep mail me your email address and I will take a couple of photos of mine with the intake/exhaust in the window. It just sits in the opening and the window closes down on it with tabs to hold it in place.

I remember visiting a co-worker dying of cancer in a hospice unit during one hottish Chicago day, and it was 82F or so inside. He was out of it with the drugs but I can imagine he would have otherwise been saying “WHEW it’s warm.” And, no fans, the air was still.

That’s a nice unit, but I can go smaller. I have whole house ac, but figure I could save money just cooling my bedroom. I could get 800/1000 btu to do that. I could get a window unit, but I thought it would be cool to get a portable!

Oops, sorry didn't read all the specs. I do now remember the extra pieces of plastic that came with it when we opened ours up and put together the exhaust hoses...

From the link I gave you: Special Features: Fits Window Width 28.25"to 96"

He might stand to learn the difference between “heaping up teachers for itching ears” (he’s a lefty who reached out to other lefties that aren’t even Christian) and “wisdom in a multitude of counselors.”

What a farce, but it goes to show, don’t ever lean on a human institution, it will fail you when you are poised for a pratfall. Call on the Lord and lean on the Lord.

Is it immoral to have running water???

I've often been heard to say that you can 'eat less, exercise more; sin less, pray more; spend less, save more.'

If that's how we are to be judged, then we're all condemned.

The answer is

“Whatever you do, do it to the glory of the Lord.”

> They have a joke in Texas. What’s the worst thing to ever happen in the history of Texas? The invention of air conditioning, because it made it possible for Yankees to live here.

I like that and will use it. Can't disagree either...lol

Well, here in the low desert of Southern California the temps are predicted to be 115 to 120 degrees this weekend. I would like to see the Pope drag his fat ass over here and spend the weekend sitting under a tree. That just might change his mind. Next thing he will be telling us is how many sheets of toilet paper to use per BM.

Rome is quite uncomfortable during the summer months. Does the Pope have the AC shut off in his Vatican hotel? Why do I think the answer is NO?

> That’s ridiculous. All you need to do is follow Sheryl Crow’s advice to use one square of TP per dump. Problem solved.

That was a longggg time ago. Now that she’s gotten older I bet she doesn’t agree with that. Either that or they call her ole Stinkfinger around her parts... : )

First, remove every air conditioning unit in the District of Criminals and a 100 mile radius around it.

Then come back and talk to me.

> Try South Louisiana in August....99F/99%RH. Now THAT feels HOT.

that's pure misery and I've been in those parts when its been just like that. Your clothes are soaked, you're dripping wet with beads of sweat flowing like you've been in a sauna. You're drained, sticky an icky all over.

When I moved here a few months ago, my daughter gave me a dehumidifier. It is amazing how much cooler it is. Of course, I have the ac on too. Try it
