A healthy retired British nurse who had worked with the elderly has ended her life in a Swiss clinic because she was afraid of getting old and being unable to to kill herself, a British newspaper reported Monday.
Gill Pharoah, 75, who suffered no serious debilitating illness and was still active, was given a lethal injection and was in good enough spirits to joke with a doctor before she died, the London Times newspaper reported.
Pharoah was afraid of suffering a stroke as happened to one of her friends, who then lived on for many years with a poor quality of life, the paper reported.
Pharoah was accompanied to the Swiss clinic in Basel by her long-time partner, John Southall, 70, who told the paper his partner would still be alive if Britain allowed people to make living wills asking that they should be helped to die if they lost the ability to kill themselves.

The fact is that many old people are a burden on society. Like all nurses, I have cared for the elderly as well as I could, but there were many occasions when I wondered why we were doing it.
What a selfish attitude she had. It seems like she really didn't embrace life for the wonder it is.
Profiles in Courage award nominee, I’m guessing.
Caroline can hang the medal over the urn.
I don't know who injected her, but whomever it is, is NO doctor, he is a murderer.
What a truly bizarre and illogical decision.
One less carbon footprint. The Left should be ecstatic.
The western culture is getting sicker and sicker.
Her reasoning has as many holes as swiss cheese....
guess she wants society to turn into Logan’s Run

Well it comes from completely secular efforts to figure out what life is about. Which comes up with a handful of empty trinkets at best.
We shouldn’t be surprised; but we should be sad.
The ungodly see little value in life. They are utilitarians, who see their worth in what they can do, a future limited by age, disease and death. Christians know what God has done for us and rejoice in the future of His unlimited love.
I think she was hasty in her decision. There was always the chance she wouldn’t get old.
people think they're God and can mandate people being kept alive when their bodies and their minds say NO...
God's will be done....HE didn't mean for us to use preposterous methods to defy death....
all we're doing is making people's lives more miserable and their deaths long and painful....
in the meantime, our young people have no futures because we oldsters need to have every single CT scan, MRi, physical therapy, medical equipment and of course free care aids at home and of course every single medicine known to man, and if one med doesn't work, heck, we'll try a dozen....there is no bottom line for the elderly and our medicare system....
but of course, you don't need to have someone kill you if you don't want to live....stop eating, stop drinking...take some extra meds at home and die in your bed.....why does govt have to have any say in that?
The Government has to have a say in every detail of your life (and death) no matter how great or trivial, Citizen.
A life distanced from God looks like that.
People who know God well tend not to just linger and linger and suffer and suffer. By the supernatural nature of things.
But to follow on, what WE might view as suffering, the patient might not.
