Sowell: The Trump Card
Creators Syndicate ^ | August 4, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 08/03/2015 1:26:58 PM PDT by jazusamo

With Hillary Clinton's multiple misdeeds coming to light and causing her political problems, reflected in her declining support in the polls, both she and the Democratic Party have reason to be concerned. But both of them may yet be rescued by "The Donald," who can turn out to be their Trump card.

Donald Trump has virtually no chance of becoming even the Republican Party's candidate in 2016, much less being elected President of the United States.

The reason is not hard to understand: Republican voters simply do not trust him, as the polls show. Nor is there any reason why they should trust him, given his chameleon-like changes in the past.

Why then is he the "front-runner" in the polls?

One reason is arithmetic. When there is a small army of Republican candidates, each with a tiny set of supporters, anyone with enough name recognition to get the support of a fifth or a fourth of the Republicans polled stands out, even if twice that many Republicans say they would never vote for him.

When both kinds of Republicans are counted, Donald Trump is both the "front-runner" and the leading pariah. The danger is not that he will get the nomination, but that his irresponsible talk will become the image of the Republican Party, and that his bombast will drown out more sober voices that need to be heard, thereby making it harder to select the best candidate.

More is involved than arithmetic, however. Many Republican voters are so disgusted with their party, especially over its repeated betrayals of them, and of the country, especially when it comes to immigration, that they are immediately attracted to anyone who voices the outrage they feel.

I usually agree with Sowell...very smart guy. But on this I believe he is wrong.I think Trump can not only with the GOP nomination and the presidency in a Reaganesque landslide.

Hope so, but, trust but verify.
1. Trump can be a kingmaker for Cruz, if he has changed some to become more honorable; if not, they he’s a kingmaker for Bush, Hitlary or someone else GopE...

2. If he becomes a king-destroyer (Cruz wrecker and does 3rd party), then we’ll know he is just evil and will be a worse blight for this country than say, McConnell or Boehner or Roberts...let’s think about this...Perot did it and at that time, it took a while for the conservatives to realize he did it on purpose...Trump otoh, is a smart guy, more visible, and likely will not like being hated by a large percentage of the country who won’t stay at his hotels...casinos, etc. His name will be Mudd. That said, it may be a check in balance, maybe he actually does want to win or wants say, Cruz.

As much as I love Indiana governor Mike Pence, he has cut taxes , reformed education , taken on public unions, kept the budget in the black etc etc etc — true conservative. He is not ready to handle the office of the POTUS

I DO UNDERSTAND YOUR LOYALTY. (But realty even PENCE’s lowkeyed accomplishments outshines Walker. My hope is that Pence if he serves in DC again, it is as a warrior in the Senate. That’s what would be best for Indiana and the nation. Not everyone needs to be the cherry on top to make a perfect sundae !

I understand and I will not be voting for Mr. Trump in the primary election. I am voting for Ted Cruz. That being said. If Trump actually gets the nomination, I would vote for him if for no other reason he would build the fence and at least attempt to deport the illegals. At least that is what he says.

I would NOT be able to vote for JEB! Bush. I simply could not do it.

Tonight, on Brett Baier, Krauthammer finally concedes that Trump is probably good for the rest of this calendar year running on his broad statements for addressing the issues, REGARDLESS whether the media thinking has keeps pounding him for not getting specific.

This is so smart I believe, for Trump to rock along with what works and stay on his own instincts before delivering the fodder for details that get him ripped to shreds.

Shall we send Kraut a copy or two of Trump’s book. My guess is he is a smart man and his copy is already being sent to him. @ that time he will act surprised and come up with another excuse.

That’s true. If Walker isn’t President, he’d be terrific in a Cabinet position, as well.

I am not 100% convinced of anything right now - other than Trump ain’t our guy.

I have no problem waiting and seeing. I’m just SO tired of our ‘Celebrity’ mentality when it comes to Presidents. These past 7+ years of 0bama have been Hell on Earth in more ways than I can list.

What a shame. So many lives lost, so much treasure squandered...and the end isn’t even in sight, yet!

Simply put, we are tired and fed up with professional politicians.

They will promise you the world, egg in your beer, whatever it takes to get elected... then, when they do get elected, all we hear is...

crickets!

Trump is a rich man. He didn’t get rich by PROMISING to build hotels. He didn’t get rich by PROMISING to build golf courses.
He actually DID build them!

Now I don’t think he might not make a mistake or two. But he will learn from them and never do it again!

I no longer give a rip what any pundit, columnist or journalist has to say about Mr. Trump, because they’re no different from any of us. They all have their own opinions and hidden or obvious favored candidates and agendas. Mr. Trump is the cause for all their consternation!!! Facts are stubborn and the facts right now are that Mr. Trump is speaking the truth and he is resonating with too many of us, which is making the heretofore all-knowing elite of the MSM on both sides way to uncomfortable. Just gosh damn, finally a voice of complete financial independence who doesn’t have to and won’t cater to them! Mr. Trump’s appeal cuts political boundaries across and appeals to a wide swath of voters!

^^^ What you said, Onyx! Go ahead, GOP asshats, give Jebbie the nod, and watch MORE people sit home than they did with Romney. I will be one of them, and I voted for Romney.

Sowell did more to turn me into a conservative and, ESPECIALLY, to let me know just how bad American public education is.

I owe virtually EVERYTHING to him - especially the way my kids turned out. I’ll give him a pass on this column...and a lot more columns, before he gets on my bad side.

Who you callin’ a fool?

Anyone callow enough to believe a person spouting what they want to hear, who is documented to hold positions diametrically opposite to what he's saying now.

Trump is lying. It's all for show.

Sowell as always knows what he is talking about. What he doesn’t mention is that Hillary can wipe the floor with him in a debate about foreign policy. The left loves Trump because what Sowell says is true. Cruz, or lose.

I know it all but America will be finished with another democrat. If Trump gets that nomination I have no choice but to hope he means what he says, because any of the democrats plan to destroy America as we know it.

I believe someone here summarized Trump’s book and he seems to have articulated conservative positions on major issues.

Maybe I stated it strongly, but for example we don’t want Jeb Bush and some others. I certainly am not going to place a democrat in office just because the republican may be flawed.

My choice would be Cruz. After that probably Walker. But if it has to be Trump electing a democrat communist instead is insane.

Blowhard’s are generally good people with an exaggerated perspective of themselves, but in the end they stumble usually because they are blowhards with an exaggerated perspective of themselves.

I want to thank Mr. Trump for telling it like it is, but I will also thank him when he drops out of the running as well.

Go Cruz go.

Great idea!

THE ART OF THE DEAL surely recommends holding your cards close to the vest until the table plays. I mean, Kraut may benefit greatly from understanding just a tad on business, as formulated in today’s market, by a master of success and experienced by even a few failures.

Trump probably never blabbed his hand just to let the other guy gain an advantage. Media as well as his opponents are dying to dissect his every policy detail the moment it is laid out.

I’m nervous about the debate, btw. Yikes!
