Days before the first Republican debate, Donald Trump has surged into the national lead in the GOP primary race, with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush following, a new NBC News/ Wall Street Journal poll shows.

Trump is the first choice of 19 percent of GOP primary voters, while 15 percent back Walker and 14 percent back Bush. Ten percent support retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

All other Republican candidates earn single digit backing. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is favored by nine percent of primary voters; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul are tied with six percent support; Florida Sen. Marco Rubio clocks in at five percent; and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Ohio Gov. John Kasich are tied with three percent apiece.

Trump on the Sunday morning shows

"They're cutting off heads and you're asking about water boarding? I like water boarding, I think it works."

Priceless, for that response alone Trump should be elected.

I think Fox will find a way to get Carly in if she’s in tie for tenth. At least I hope so, she is very impressive and back on my acceptable list.

I toss my hat into the ring of Dr. Ben Carson,

Carson does not have a Warrior mindset. I can't at all imagine him being tough on the issue of the border or illegal immigration.

Anyone who isn't for building the wall and bluntly dealing with this criminal invasion by 3rd world illegals doesn't get my consideration.

Carly should replace Krispie, in that line up.

Agree, Krispie is a big government fool.

I wouldn’t trust this poll. Trump is probably closer to 25%-30%.

I'm really disgusted with the RNC mentality. Here you have Donald Trump giving this amazing gift to the US, a candidate who can easily become the next US President, and a chance to not spend hundreds of millions of dollars on primary battles.

It would make so much more sense to embrace candidate Trump and spend our time, money, and energy on primaries to get rid of the DC bums who support Boehner or McConnell.

If Trump has a real good debate, I can't imagine how logically anything else makes sense. The others are young enough so they could spend four years in their present roles, helping Trump clean up the mess, and then run for the Presidency.

Where is the flaw in that logic?

“Yes, and Trump isn’t surging...he lost traction in this poll.”

Don’t you wish.

There is no flaw in your logic.

So, I want to see her in the first tier debate. I imagine even she is horrified by Planned Parent Hood.

One of the biggest problems we have in choosing a candidate is that many people have become single-issue voters.
Sometimes you just have to look at the Big Picture.

What I found very interesting is that the more vocal candidates of late who have been telling hard truths have all moved up. Note that Cruz is now number 4, followed by huckster and junior.

What tickles me almost as much as seeing Jeb fade, is seeing Rubio down to 5%.

Rubio the snake is laying in the weeds. I saw one poll where he was far and away the top 2nd choice. He’s a shyster who can sell snow to eskimos. Don’t count him out just yet.
