RUSSIAN-backed rebels in Ukraine’s east believed they had shot down a Ukraine Airforce fighter jet as disturbing new footage shows them ransacking the luggage of passengers and crew from Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17.

A year ago today, 298 passengers and crew including 38 Australian citizens and residents died aboard the Kuala Lumpur bound commercial flight after it was shot down over east Ukraine, 40km from the Russian border.

Much footage exists particularly on the internet of the aftermath of the downed airliner, smouldering over three main wreckage sites about the rebel stronghold of the embattled Dontesk region.

But, after a 12-month pursuit, News Corp Australia has obtained new footage shot by the rebels themselves on a camcorder as they captured what they initially believed to be a Ukrainian air force fighter jet they had just shot down using a ground-to-air missile system.

The last words of the recording here quote a rebel expressing wonder at who would send a passenger plane right over their conflict.

In a drunken stupor, no doubt. I mean . . . why not give some drunken thugs an advanced AA battery? What could possibly go wrong?

my uncle flew B-24’s in WWII. I remember him saying one time all the pilots knew the thing couldn’t fly nearly as high as the army was officially saying it could.

Video was out very close to the event itself...it’s not new at all...nor never seen...I think there’s a thread way back about this and discussion...

Therefore one side or the other is simply using it to fire things up again. Best bet just let the investigation be as it is...because both sides will blame the other...and in reality both sides are to blame...directly and otherwise....keeping in mind there were and are more than two sides.

KAL 007 strayed out of its flight path.

Being no accident, KAL 007 doesn't fit into the class. Let Lt. Col. Gennadi Osipovich explain (in 1996):

Gennadi Osipovich held up his thick hands to show how, 13 years ago, he maneuvered his SU-15 fighter to blast a Korean 747 airliner out of the sky.

It was the morning of Sept. 1, 1983, and Lt. Col. Gennadi Osipovich's unit had scrambled from its secret base on Sakhalin Island to intercept an intruder. After trailing the unidentified plane for more than 60 miles, the Soviet pilot zoomed alongside to get a look for himself.

"I was just next to him, on the same altitude, 150 meters to 200 meters away," he recalled in conversations with a reporter during the weekend.

From the flashing lights and the configuration of the windows, he recognized the aircraft as a civilian type of plane, he said.

"I saw two rows of windows and knew that this was a Boeing," he said. "I knew this was a civilian plane. But for me this meant nothing. It is easy to turn a civilian type of plane into one for military use."

Minutes later, he fired two air-to-air missiles, sending Korean Air Lines Flight 007 crashing into the sea, killing 269 people and causing what President Boris N. Yeltsin has called the greatest tragedy of the Cold War.

That’s all true. I only mentioned it out of full disclosure, knowing the other flights had been on long established commercial routes. The 747 has a unique silhouette and couldn’t be mistaken for the RC-135. As he said, he knew it was a civilian plane.

I watched the 4:12 video on you tube. Not much new. The transcript contained more dialog then was in the video.

What is clear is this. It was an international no fly zone. Malaysian airline was financially broke. They have since gone into liquidation. They cut through the combat zone to save 2000 pounds of fuel going to the Netherlands, in my opinion. Any aircraft in that zone WAS PRESUMED COMBAT !! They are as responsible for these deaths as who ever shot it down. Thousand of aircraft were going around but a few Malaysian airliners were sneaking through. This one failed. That is what happened.

What don’t you get? The path was a ruitine route. Vlad Putin is pushing his thugs directly under a flight corridor.

Your main point is that Putin has nothing to do with this right?

Not true. It was not closed for flying and about 900 planes passed through this area during the past 7 days.

Yeah, right. I would've been on that thread, so BS.

... also Malaysian Airlines wasn't even the most frequent flier over this area. It is just that Russia has realized they can't deny shooting down this plane any more so now they have switched to victim blaming and trying to play up the bad reputation of Malaysian Airlines. Yet Lufthansa, that has a good reputation, had more flights over that territory in the past 7 days. Picture is partial list of airliners who flew over the place during that time

That does appear to be the meme that is developing . . . Malaysian Airlines deliberately flew into the war zone.

Because Russians have thousands of people working in their meme-factories spreading disinformation in 12 hour shifts. Sad to see when some people are buying their bullcrap and end up repeating it.

One independent journalist did research and found a huge network of interconnected Russian disinformation sites. They cater for different levels of beliefs. The article shows that for this war Russians even run a fake pro-Ukrainian site where their made up person starts as a patriot and slowly becomes demoralized as the time goes by - all Russian psych war of course.

Good that people exist who bother to research and expose this - https://globalvoicesonline.org/2015/07/13/open-source-information-reveals-pro-kremlin-web-campaign/
