Have you ever gone to a national park, and noticed that minorities are not represented in the exact proportions to the general population? Well, the New York Times certainly has! (Can't you imagine a Times reporter getting out of his car in Yosemite, and the first thing he notices is not the breathless beauty around him but the race of the other people in the parking lot?)
The national parks attracted a record 292.8 million visitors in 2014, but a vast majority were white and aging. The most recent survey... found that 22 percent of visitors were minorities, though they make up some 37 percent of the population.
That's a gap of 15%! If there is a racial disparity in any education, job function or even hobby, racism must be involved, seems to imply the New York Times. (Not including, of course, racial disparity in the reporting staff, editorial staff, or owners of the New York Times.)
A neighbor, Carla DeRise, has been to Mount Rainier and other parks, and is game to go again. She just cant get any of her friends to come along. They are worried about unfriendly white people, hungry critters and insects, and unforgiving landscapes, said Ms. DeRise, 51, an African-American. So she mainly hikes alone, albeit with some anxiety. I dont have a weapon, she quipped. Yet.
You see? Black people don't go to national parks for fear of white people. The liberal's racism in this is double fold. First, for caricaturing blacks as being fearful of whites (most aren't). And secondly, by perpetuating racial resentment and hatred by writing about one paranoid black woman who feels she needs a weapon to be safe around white people…

That kind of cross-country vacationing by automobile was (I expect) much rarer among black families in the 1930's-1960's, partly because incomes were lower, and partly because a friendly welcome could not be taken for granted in a lot of small town across the country. The intergenerational tradition isn't there. And today, one has to add in the 70 percent illegitimacy rate in black America. Visiting Yellowstone is probably out of reach for the single mom with three kids.
The NPS needs more eastern parks, and more parks nearer urban areas. I've argued that for years, mainly from an interest in the historical parks, which will tend to be much more eastern and urban to begin with. Whether minorities will go to historical parks is another question (you don't see many on Civil War battlefields), but as a logistical matter, they would at least be more accessible.
Minorities are heavily concentrated in urban areas surrounded by huge swaths of suburban sprawl. There aren’t a lot of National Parks (or State Parks) located close to these areas so accessibility is an issue.
Location, income, family structure ...
We don’t go to National Parks, either: it’s a huge and expensive undertaking with ten children, so we make other choices, such as renting a house at the beach.
I was going to guess climate change.
“Black people don’t go to national parks for fear of white people.”
Fear of white people in gorilla suits?
Are we talking black/black or a percentage. 1/32, 1/16? We'll need a non-racist black bureaucracy to administer the program headed up by a cabinet level secretary. Admission credits will be sold to non blacks to purchase Old English 40s. ETC.
The whole country has ergot poisoning.
It couldn’t be the maleducation provided by our glorious public schools and the black liberation theology of our imperious white house.
After all, how many national parks have Mosques or are dedicated to Marx, Lenin, Mao, Adolf, Che, or Fidel?
Classical music concerts too. Must be White Privilege that deliberately keeps non-Whites out. Nothing to do with the fact that most don’t care for classical music or national parks.
A good many black people fear whites attacking them. Not based on experience or statistics but due to stories they heard long ago.
You’ll very rarely see a group of white people attack black folks. It happens. But not often. The reverse is not true. White people tell each other it’s safe only to make one of the near daily videos where a group of blacks attack a white.
“slack-black”. I like it.

I visit lots of National Parks and Monuments to see something interesting and to get my Pass Port book stamped. (you should get an NPS Pass Port and if eligible a life time pass)
I always check black attendance. It is low or non existent. The Park service has gone overboard to find some barely relevant event to celebrate as being black. A black person can visit a park and find something black to observe and even celebrate.
That is not, however, a great attractor of black people. It was built but they do not come.
National Parks and monuments are for the preservation of something worth while. Although there are some black people that grasp the concept, it seems proven by attendance that most just don’t give a damn
Just put up signs:
No Dogs or White People
The upside is that there are few muggings and gangbangers threatening people in the parks. Maybe our “last refuge”?
I have left campgrounds with inner city blacks at a campsite. The constant rap music at maximum levels drove me away.
Inner city people have no idea how to enjoy nature.
It’s all marketing. They just need to find a way to bring the parks into the “thug culture.” Maybe stage a few rap “concerts” in parks, print park logos on oversized sports jerseys, start “drive-by Tuesdays” bring a friend/homey it’ll be fun, offer admission discounts to drug dealers...
You can take the homies outta da 'hood, but...
It couldnt be the maleducation provided by our glorious public schools and the black liberation theology of our imperious white house.

Naw, they would just rather have a set of new rims
Some folks want the luxury of modern convenience. Not a lot of parks have the same amenities as an urban environment.
I’ve met a lot of white folks who see camping or sleeping in a wilderness lodge as dumb. I’ve met far more blacks like that though. The ones who do tend to band together. A coworker of mine enjoys outdoor living and hunting. He has a few other black friends he goes out with on such endeavors but it’s a small group. Far more won’t even entertain the idea. Another coworker when we mention it just right out the gate starts dismissing it.
A lot simply like their non-rural living and can’t imagine getting away and spending a day in the woods much less a night.
