NEW YORK (AP) — Microsoft will cut 7,800 jobs and take a $7.6 billion impairment charge as it attempts to revive its flagging phone hardware business.

The company paid $7.3 billion for Nokia’s phone business in April 2014, seeking to push rapidly into the smartphone sphere as its traditional software business slowed. Microsoft ultimately wanted to build an ecosystem that made customers that are loyal to a slew of products, much as Apple and Google have done so successfully.

No worries, lots of H1Bs to take their place. I hear they like Cruz.

They’re just coming to the same realization as HP did with their tablet business...it’s tough to compete with a “good enough” technology like the iPad. People aren’t looking for a full desktop experience on their tablets and businesses have been slow to create a viable strategy to move away from laptops.

Lots of H1B’s from Pakistan and India being hired by Infosys. Over the last couple of months I’ve processed about a hundred where I work P/T. And our center is just one of many in the Puget Sound area.

Well, this is on top of the layoffs they announced last year.

This news comes about one year after Microsoft launched its largest-ever layoffs: 18,000.

Oh good! Maybe that Windows Indian call center will stop calling me to tell me my Windows computer is throwing error messages at them. :-)

I guess Microsoft is laying people off because they couldn’t hire enough H1Bs. Or something.

Actually this should be good news, with that many people leaving the workforce, the unemployment rate should drop even more. And now they won’t be burdened anymore with work and will be able to spend more time with their families, Just like the president said before, time to rejoice??

Okay, Infosys Ltd is an Indian multinational corporation that provides business consulting, information technology, software engineering and outsourcing services. It is headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka.

They provide temporary positions. They're being sent to Microsoft.

The beaches must be very crowded with all of the unemployed strolling along them, breathing in the fresh air, appreciating life. That Obama sure knows how to make his citizens happy.

I have a former co-worker who went to work for Nokia and survived to be part of the Microsoft assimilation. I hope he's not caught up in this round of layoffs.

Layoffs are bad enough, it’s the replaceoffs that’s inexcusable.

That explains a lot.

I found a bug in Microsoft Windows CE operating system- it took me nearly 2 months to get an update for a KNOWN BUG with a KNOWN SOLUTION from the people in India who were working on it.

And even when it was fixed, I had to jump through hoops to explain why I needed it (ummm.. because its broken?) and they put in software code that you had to add to activate the fix (no matter that EVERYONE needed it, and it actually was more risky to conditionally include the fix)

My friend (assimilated into MS from Nokia) is out on short term disability (cancer), but he is likely to be impacted upon return.

Rick Santorum is vehemently against all these H1B Visas.

Glad some of our politicians put Americans first!
