Land is the ultimate capital. Talk about your stock, bonds, derivatives, gold or any other investment and it is going to be subject to theft by the gub’mint. The right piece of land will heat your home, feed you, supply water and eliminate wastes. It will support livestock and nearly any small scale enterprise you may want to pursue. It is, in fact, the elemental life.

Until the government takes it due to unpaid property taxes.

True enough. But the clueless will be in worse state for much longer before the final bullet.

They exist. My great-aunt’s family never had full electric on the farm, just batteries, and no water other than wells. She did washing for hire with a diesel-powered agitator and mangle. No indoor toilets.

Yes, one can live that way, but it’s not my goal in life!

Some of the best food I’ve ever eaten was on Crete in a tiny village. Salad, goat cheese, brown bread, olives, local honey.

“one retiree’s monthly pension commonly supports several generations, since so many adults cannot find work.”

“one retiree’s monthly pension commonly supports several generations, *therefore* many adults cannot find work.”
It’s called ‘capital allocation’...

I went hungry the whole day when our cruise ship docked near Athens (I was 17). Couldn’t stomach a single thing on the menu and still couldn’t. Well, the olives (if black) on your list would have been OK. Ironically, England served the only edible food of all the European countries as far as I was concerned (as long as one stuck with fish & chips).

Ever try spaghetti squash?
We used to use that for spaghetti years ago. Forgot all about it.

I never had that problem. Was in Brindisi Italy for a while and put on weight. Portugal and Korea had decent food as well; both went heavy on rice.

Same problem in Roma. As a teenager I naively was expecting the best “pizza” in the world. Nope, nothing like that, threw it out. Plain white rice is OK with me. But any veggies mixed in and I throw it out. Korea and Japan I would never travel to for culinary reasons. Some of the Asian chicken is OK. But watch out for dog mixed in.

I found Korean food to be quite good though simple. Asian chicks are always welcome.

I never thought I would live to see the day when someone praised English cooking.

Well yeah, but we don't have goats. I've always thought we should, though, since we've got kudzu. Kudzu and goats would be a brilliant combination.

Do goats eat kudzu?

I’m going to get some (goats) and make cheese. I’ve practiced with cow’s milk and it was good. My main problem is I moved from Mexifornia to Tennessee to get a basement (among many other reasons), but my basement is a big disappointment. Not cold enough! We’ll have to dig a ‘dairy’, as the locals call them.

Here in the US, they throw you in jail for being self-sufficient.
