New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie broke with many in his party’s social conservative wing Wednesday, telling reporters that government employees who have objections to issuing same-sex marriage licenses should not be allowed to opt out.

While many conservatives have called for steps to protect government employees who have objections to Friday’s same-sex marriage ruling from the Supreme Court, Christie said those who work for the government should abide by their oaths.

Christians need not apply.

To even ignore this reasonable request shows that Christie is unfit.

What no one is saying, is that ROP members have an automatic exemption. They can do what they want. Christians will be brought to the Coliseum to meet the lions.

Frankly I don’t understand how government clerks who issue things can be allowed to individualize their duties either.

To me the DMV is just the DMV, I don’t want to have to deal with various political and religious views of individual clerks, and have to clerk shop to get the government permit or paperwork done.

Chris Christie vetoed a homosexual marriage bill in New Jersey.

So I’m sure he will use that fact as being on the side of traditional marriage.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie broke with many in his party’s social conservative wing Wednesday ...

"Broke with" implies that he was in some way aligned with social conservatives in the past. That would be a gross conceptual error.

Christie said those who work for the government should abide by their oaths.

In other words.. they should just follow order.. we heard that one before

It was not the oaths they took....the court change the contract and now demands they follow a self-evidently illegal and immoral order ....

alas, that is a sober, realistic analysis, and the one that will ultimately carry the day.

this abomination is now the “law of the land”. this is sort of what we have to do in the theater of action as accepting defeat, legally speaking.

perhaps Christians should find other jobs. but I’m not sure we can say that is mandatory. Paul prayed for those in Caesar’s household. He didn’t tell them to go look for work elsewhere. of course our economy is more fluid than theirs...but on the other hand, though this is wicked, Caesar’s household was still more wicked.

so ....I don’t like it, but what you say is dealing with reality, and there are reasons why we need to have administrators of various licenses simply issue the licenses. we don’t want clerks to see if they oppose a church’s theology every time they apply for a building permit....

And so it begins. The fascists can now identify Christians by simply inquiring their views and thoughts on Gay Marriage. And then they can be isolated, and lose their jobs because of it.

Welcome to the RW Fascist Democrats Amerikka

You'll get flamed but I basically agree.

Should court clerks have the freedom to deny marriage licenses to people who were once divorced? Lived together first without being married?

It wasn't that long ago there were stories of Muslims who refused to sell pork to customers. Everyone was yelling "get a different job!" then.

Loyalty and obedience to the state? Not surprising coming from a statist POS like Christie.

re: Christie said those who work for the government should abide by their oaths.

So chaplains in the military who have taken both oaths to God and to the military need to abide by their oath to do what their government leaders tells them to do in all circumstances. Conscience is irrelevant. God is irrelevant. “I was only following orders”.

That was the excuse German military leadership used to carry out Hitler’s orders. They took an oath to the Fuhrer so they needed to abide by their oaths.
