Google Photos Identifies Two Black Users As ‘Gorillas’

Mountain View, Calif. (CBS SACRAMENTO) — Google was forced to apologize after its Photos program identified two black users as “gorillas.”

Jacky Alcine, 21, of Brooklyn checked his Google Photos account Sunday and found that the program had automatically generated and labeled a folder titled “Gorillas” for a photo of himself and a friend taken in 2013, Yahoo Tech reports.

The Google Photos image recognition software is intended to identify a photo and automatically file photos into groups with similar images – a photo of a tree would automatically be placed in a folder filled with other photos of trees.

But the software showed a glitch Sunday, prompting Google to apologize for placing the black friends into an automatically generated “gorillas” folder. Google’s chief architect of social, Yonatan Zunger, responded: “@jackyalcine Thank you for telling us so quickly! Sheesh. High on my list of bugs you *never* want to see happen. ::shudder::”

“We’re appalled and genuinely sorry that this happened,” a Google representative told Yahoo Tech. “We are taking immediate action to prevent this type of result from appearing. There is still clearly a lot of work to do with automatic image labeling, and we’re looking at how we can prevent these types of mistakes from happening in the future.”

Is the machine racist, the programmer racist, the company racist or is it simply a bug that needs to be fixed?

Isn’t Algore a big shareholder in that racist Google? Should Google go the way of the Confederate flag?

Clearly the software developers who wrote the code for this are racists...

I had a friend with a ton of long, beautiful, natural red hair who was asked to leave the ape house in the zoo after the male orangutan attacked the glass trying to get to her. It happens.

If you ever had any question as to whether Google is a cyborgenic operation or not this is a crack in the shield.

One of the many artificial intelligence components slipped through the human screeners.

Japan Gorilla Described as ‘Handsome’ Has Attracted a Following

A handsome gorilla named Shabani at a Japanese zoo has acquired a following of women who judge him to be “ikemen,” or a “good-looking man.”

A western lowland gorilla, Shabani came to the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoya, Japan, in 2007 after having been raised in Sydney, Australia, The Telegraph reported.

But Shabani didn’t quite attract the female attention in Sydney that he has in Japan, a media relations officer from the Australian zoo told The Telegraph. It’s possible that his handsome features developed later in the 18-year-old gorilla’s life.

We took the kiddies to the zoo & happened to be looking at some species of monkeys when a group of black women came through. One of the gals had “blonde” hair.

One of the monkeys saw her, picked up a pile of staw & stuck it on top of his head. The woman was not amused, but we thought it was hysterical - and so did her black companions.
