A Texas minister set himself on fire and died to ‘inspire’ justice
The Washington Post ^ | July 16, 2014 | Lindsey Bever

One Monday in June, 79-year-old Charles Moore, a retired United Methodist minister, drove to Grand Saline, Tex., his childhood home town some 70 miles east of Dallas. He pulled into a strip mall parking lot, knelt down on a small piece of foam and doused himself with gasoline.

Then, witnesses said, he set himself on fire.

...

The Tyler Morning Telegraph obtained a copy of the suicide note from Grand Saline police. In it, Moore lamented past racism in Grand Saline and beyond. He called on the community to repent and said he was “giving my body to be burned, with love in my heart” for those who were lynched in his home town as well as for those who did the lynching, hoping to address lingering racism.

Well, I'm not inspired.

Was anybody else inspired by this?

“I would much prefer to go on living and enjoy my beloved wife and grandchildren and others,” he wrote, “but I have come to believe that only my self-immolation will get the attention of anybody and perhaps inspire some to higher service.”

I'm inspired to eat some campfire roasted smores.

Thanks for the inspiration, Rev.

Grand Saline, population 3266... exactly how many lynchings were done in his hometown in the last 150 years? Oh yes... none. In Van Zandt county? Oh yes... none.

Bring attention to a non-existent problem with zero history as he presents it. Way to waste a life. Almost as terrible as a lynching, is it not?

1 Cor 6:19-20

Why is it so many of these so-called men of God don’t know and/or don’t heed Scripture?

The guy was clearly an idiotic, non-bible-believing member of “progressive” mainline Protestantism. I'd be willing to bet that in his entire lifetime there had not been a lynching in his hometown.

Moore was a longtime elder in the Southwest Texas Annual (regional) Conference, where in addition to serving churches he advocated for the abolition of the death penalty and for gay rights within The United Methodist Church.

Mostly likely was one of those ministers who let the Methodist gay marriage ruling get within a hair’s breath a few years ago.

The Methodists have been a few votes away from allowing gay marriage and gay ministers, for years.

It’s a sick church.

Seems to me I remember Buddhist monks in Saigon setting themselves on fire. Ancient history. But, it really didn't stop the war. In fact, it gave the leftists and anti-war, anti-freedom crowd in the media and college campuses fodder to oppose the war.

Result: Two years after American and ally combat forces left and Congress wouldn't fund the Saigon govt., Vietnam was lost to the North Vietnamese communists.

That then led to the slaughter in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

79-year-old Charles Moore, a retired United Methodist minister

At what point do we starting calling him a former minister?
