ABBEVILLE, S.C. — Three people stood in line recently at the Southern Patriot Shop, Confederate flags tucked under their arms, waiting their turn to check out at the cash register.
Owner Robert Hayes, a 75-year-old with crow’s feet and a lingering smile, had a bit of advice for his customers before they headed back out into a world they say is drifting further and further from the America they believe in.
“Don’t display them in your house but outside of your house,” Hayes said. “We need to be making a statement to the people that know their history and know that [the flag is] not what it’s being accused of.”
That sentiment is growing among many in this rural part of South Carolina and around the South. Many former supporters say they now understand why the flag should come down from its prominent perch in South Carolina’s capitol complex. But others, especially well outside of Columbia, are stunned at the turn on the flag after photos surfaced of alleged Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof posing with the flag.
Early Saturday, the flag came down briefly from the front of the State House after Bree Newsome, 30, a North Carolina educator and activist from Charlotte, scaled the 30-foot pole and detached it. She brought it down the pole and was arrested; authorities later re-raised the flag.

Hmmm. How long until possession of one of these flags is classified as a hate crime? The way things are spiraling out of control, I wouldn’t be shocked. Lynrd Skynrd, you listening? Alabama?
I’ve never lived in the South, but suddenly I have this compulsion to get my hands on one of them.
During the war, Confederate Solders died defending their families and communities, they didn’t die for Slavery.
Would you believe that I heard on the radio a report from a Minister in Portland that this flag was never used on the battle field during the civil war?
He said this flag was only created after the war in order to attack blacks.
No one knows their history anymore, they make it up as they go along.
And yet this hysterical climbing on the bad flag, bad flag bandwagon makes me want to go out and buy one, half Yankee, half Tarheel that I am.
IMO, this flag is as offensive as the Confederate flag:
Either one can say, "I am proud of my heritage," or "I oppose you."

I saw something a tad startling. A plumpish, late-twenty-something white man with beard carrying a parade-sized Confederate battle flag and what appeared to be a bible clutched to his chest while wearing a Confederate style hat and tunic (and jeans) was marching along highway 20 between Tallahassee and Panama City. He was in the middle of nowhere, so he’d been marching a while. Periodically, he’d jerk the flag straight up. He appeared to be talking or singing to himself. He was definitely going to be one tired guy by the time he got somewhere he could rest.
I haven’t been out much since the (artificial) flag controversy and I wondered what others had seen concerning flag displays. (Incidentally, several years ago a black employee where I worked had a large Confederate battle flag on his truck’s back window. I’m certain that the company would have said something to a white. But so far as I know nobody said anything to him. It wasn’t his daily driver, so it wasn’t present all the time. Just another curious oddity.)
the Afro-American flag is as offensive to me as sexual identity flags or the Mexican flag.
I would hope he responds to each equally....
The Confederate Battle Flag targets our unruly and corrupt government.
That it does. The Secessionists had the right of it as far as secession went. The only possible justification for the war was to end slavery, and yet Lincoln said he was willing to accept slavery to preserve the Union. If he meant that, than by waging war, he betrayed the foundations of this country, and if he didn’t, well, he was a politician.
Slavery did not have a damn thing to do with the War.
It was the passage of travel and goods down the Mississippi.

That was last week. It’s a different game now.
