Jim Webb: Confederate soldiers fought honorably
Politico ^ | June 24, 2015 | By Nick Gass

Posted on 06/24/2015 2:35:48 PM PDT by Brad from Tennessee

Former Virginia senator and potential Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb weighed in on the Confederate flag debate on Wednesday, urging careful consideration of both sides of the historical argument.

“This is an emotional time and we all need to think through these issues with a care that recognizes the need for change but also respects the complicated history of the Civil War. The Confederate Battle Flag has wrongly been used for racist and other purposes in recent decades. It should not be used in any way as a political symbol that divides us,” Webb wrote in a Facebook post.

Americans should remember that people on both sides fought honorably, Webb said, “including slave holders in the Union Army from states such as Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware, and that many non-slave holders fought for the South.”

“It was in recognition of the character of soldiers on both sides that the federal government authorized the construction of the Confederate Memorial 100 years ago, on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery,” he wrote. . .

They fought with zeal and skill, but to what end? To tear apart the United States of America. Hardly an honorable goal.

Same could easily be said of the USA versus England.

I guess what you are saying is that we should return this country to the crown. (Hint: We won’t be doing that, either.)

Oh thanks for clearing that up Jim. When will CNN point out that the Emancipation proclamation only “freed” SOUTHERN slaves AFTER secession? LORD almighty this is a den of retards, starting with creepy racist guy who evidently reloaded FIVE times. Hello?

The South fought to SAVE the republic.

Unfortunately the wrong side won and got to thus write the history books and make it into a war over slavery.

Lincoln was a dictator.

When one listens to these idiots and yes many or if not most are from up north and the NAACP then you would think that the whole war was about freeing slaves and the south wanted to take over the north which is so far from the truth.

The South fought to SAVE the republic.

Obviously not, since they left it when they thought slavery was threatened.

If you can't admit that -- that they wanted their own country that would be safe for slaveowning -- then you're going to have trouble understanding what happened.

I already hear the crybaby lefties, “YEAH YEAH, WELL, THE NAZIS THOUGHT THEY FOUGHT HONORABLY TOO!”

But of course they will ignore the “malice toward none” inaugural speech of Lincoln.

The difference is, they were part of a democratic republic and had a vote on everything that happened. As long as the South was dominant in running the Federal government, they were happy.

It was only when they lost the election of 1860 that they rebelled. IMHO, the rebellion was foolish, for while their power would have gradually declined over time, slavery probably would have lasted at least another 40 years, although its expansion would have been halted.

Exactly.

The South said ENOUGH! If you Yankees want to live under the thumb of a tyrannical federal government then more power to you, but we in the South want to remain a Republic that respects the rights of states, and we will go our merry way, thank you very much.

But Lincoln would have none of that!

Lincoln knew if the South won all the states would eventually join the victorious Southern Republic and his dream of an all powerful federal government led by him in perpetuity would die.

In any case what matters today is whether we’ll let the democrats force a division which really seems to be what they’re trying to do.

” As long as the South was dominant in running the Federal government, they were happy”

When exactly was that??

“It was only when they lost the election of 1860 that they rebelled.”

You don’t know history. Seriously, read a book, and not a public school book. A real book on history.

They were fighting for independence from a US government who sought to force their way upon them. I suspect the average Confederate soldier gave no thought to the notion they were protecting the institution of slavery but rather fighting for their southern homeland and heritage. In actuality, there were very few slaveholders, southern whites were not rich enough and actually worked the farms and businesses of the south. many were from the mountains were there was no slavery at all.

Even more ironic, the pastor that was killed voted FOR displaying it on the South Carolina Statehouse in 2000.

Amazon customer service is saying they were ordered by Obama not to sell the flag. I've never owned a Confederate flag, but think I may try to get one. This is ridiculous. Where is it going to stop. The left is now attacking Thomas Jefferson because he owned slaves. So did Washington.

The families of the victims showed true Christian love and forgiveness. Instead of bringing attention to the extraordinary compassion of these Christian families, the left is using the murders to gain more control over the population. What will be next?

I grew up in the South, so I saw the flag all the time, but never connected it to racism. The KKK used to burn crosses to terrorize people. Will they ban crosses next? I wouldn't put it pass liberals to try.

Like this one, I suppose:

http://www.amazon.com/Battle-Cry-Freedom-Civil-War/dp/0195038630/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1435182822&sr=1-1&keywords=Battle+Cry+of+Freedom

It’s pretty good, goes through all the political disputes leading up the the Civil War. The Missouri Compromise, the Know-Nothing movement, the Mexican War, the abolitionist movement - it’s all there.

Let me ask you this.

If a communist manages to get elected president and is supported by a majority of communists in congress and then start implementing the communist agenda and ignoring the constitution.

And a group of states says... TO HECK WITH THAT! we are leaving! and will leave free of you commies.

Who is trying to save the country? The commies who took control? or the states that want to leave and live free under the constitution?

See how that works?

I have many books about the war and there are a couple of books made back in the 50’s and 60’s.

In them are letters from soldiers on both sides and there is hardly a mention about slaves or slavery.

Another point.
When you look at the books made back in the 50’s and 60’s to today then there is a massive difference on the facts.
